Definitions of attributes
Following are the definitions of attributes that were first introduced with the organisation object.
«organisation:»
Specifies the ID of an organisation object. An organisation ID is made up of » prefix, followed by 2 to 4 letters, digits, a dash and the database source (in the RIPE Database this is ‘RIPE’). For example:
ORG-SANT1-RIPE
Note that all parts are mandatory, thus would be an invalid ID as it is missing the numeric part.
Please see section below to find out how to specify auto-generated organisation IDs.
The organisation ID cannot be reused. If an organisation ID was used in the past within an organisation object and then deleted, this ID cannot be used in new organisation objects.
The auto-generation of organisation IDs and preventing reuse of them simplifies the external references. Note that when an organisation changes name, the can be modified accordingly. There is no need to change the organisation ID.
«org-name:»
Specifies the name of the organisation that this organisation object represents in the whois database. This is an ASCII-only text attribute. This restriction is because the attribute is a look-up key and the whois protocol does not allow specifying character sets in queries. The user can put the name of the organisation in non-ASCII character sets in the attribute if required.
«org-type:»
Specifies the type of the organisation. The possible values are for Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, for Regional Internet Registries, for National Internet Registries, for Local Internet Registries, and for all other organisations. Note that in the RIPE NCC service region there are no National Internet Registries, therefore in the RIPE Database there will not be any organisation object with this value in the attribute.
«org:»
This attribute may appear in any object type. It points to an existing organisation object representing the entity that holds the resource, (in the cases where the whois database object represents an Internet resource). In other objects, it can be used to specify the business relations. The value of this attribute is the ID of the organisation object. It is mandatory in the inetnum and inet6num objects with , , and values. It is optional in all other objects.
The attribute is single-valued in the inetnum, inet6num and aut-num objects, and it is multi-valued in all other objects. The attribute is used to specify the holder of a resource in inetnum, inet6num and aut-num objects, thus it must be single-valued in them. In other objects, it specifies business relations (such as a person object, where it can be used to specify whom the person works for) it can be multiple (in the person object example, a person might work for several companies).
What is WHOIS?
When you register a domain name,
the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)
requires your domain name registrar to submit your personal contact information to the WHOIS database.
Once your listing appears in this online domain WHOIS directory, it is publicly available to anyone who chooses to
check domain names using the WHOIS search tool.
There are a variety of third parties who may check domain names in the WHOIS check database, including:
- Individuals check domain names for expiration dates
- Registrars check domain names when transferring ownership
- Authorities check domain names when investigating criminal activity
As an accredited domain names registrar, Network Solutions must comply with the WHOIS database
requirements set forth by ICANN. However, in an effort to ensure that customers feel comfortable with
the visibility of their personal information, Network Solutions offers three options for your WHOIS
database listing.
Private WHOIS Database Listing
Having your personal information made available to the public will increase your risk of becoming a victim
of hackers, spammers and even data miners. To keep your contact information out of the hands of those who
may use it maliciously, Network Solutions offers private domain name registration. For a small monthly
fee, we’ll act as your proxy which means that anyone who does a WHOIS lookup for your domain name
information will find our contact information, not yours.
WHOIS Lookup
Our WHOIS lookup services are designed to help you achieve convenience and peace of mind. Our exceptional
customer service team is here to help guide you through the simple WHOIS setup process, while our private
WHOIS database listing ensures your information is protected. You can also use our WHOIS lookup services
to find out when that your domain you have your eye on is set to expire, as well as who owns it, if their
information is public. Choose Network Solutions for your reliable WHOIS provider.
Network Solutions believes that its customers should ultimately decide how their contact information
will be listed in the WHOIS database. When you’re ready to register a domain name, consider your WHOIS options
before your personal information becomes available to the public.

WHOIS domain lookup — FAQ
WHOIS is a protocol that is used to search various databases for specific types of information related to the internet. When one speaks of WHOIS data, this usually refers to information about a domain name’s status and contacts that is stored in the database of the registry in charge of its zone (such as .com, .org) as well as by the registrar where the domain is currently managed.
Gandi’s WHOIS lookup service is a free tool that lets you search all these databases for domain information at once.
While there exist several ways to search WHOIS data, we have provided you with a lookup tool that is easy to use. All you need to do is enter the domain name you are searching for (like example.com) in our WHOIS search engine, and we do the rest!
Our WHOIS lookup tool will then display the *public WHOIS data* that corresponds to the domain name you searched for. This information typically contains data about the domain’s status, dates, and nameservers, though it may also display some contact information within the boundaries of what is allowed by GDPR compliance (learn more).
The data returned from Gandi’s WHOIS lookup tool depends on a couple of factors:
- The *extension* of the domain name you searched for. Depending on the extension (such as .com, .de, .co.uk) the registry in charge of its respective zones may disclose different information depending on their policy. This is because there is not one database containing all the WHOIS data, but many (each registry manages their own database).
- The use of WHOIS privacy by the domain’s contacts (learn more about WHOIS privacy at Gandi) which allows hiding some contact information from the public.
Gandi’s WHOIS lookup service is *GDRP* compliant (learn more), and so the data we present is limited by the bounds of this European regulation. Depending on the above factors, information that may be returned by Gandi’s WHOIS lookup tool includes, but may not be limited to, a domain’s: availability, status, registrar, reseller, creation and expiration dates, registrant and contact information, nameservers, DNSSEC status, etc.
The WHOIS protocol is therefore used to query the database of the registry or registrar in order to ask for current information about a specific domain name. If the domain name has been registered, and therefore exists in the database, it will return the public data on record for that domain.
At Gandi, we know that keeping your personal data private is essential for your trust. This is why we have WHOIS privacy activated by default for customers who register domain names with us.
With this option (that you can disable if you want), we replace your personal data in Gandi’s WHOIS data with the mention, «redacted for privacy», and only display the company name, state, and country. Note, however, that it is not available for all extensions (learn more).
Creating organisation objects
The webupdates or syncupdates interface can be used to create an organisation object.
whois -t organisation
Organisation object IDs are auto-generated similar to the way person/role attributes are auto-generated. During creation of the object the user has to specify the ID of an organisation object as , then it will be assigned an appropriate ID. The organisation ID is assigned using the initials of attribute of the object. Or, the user can specify the letter combination he/she prefers. For example if the user wants as the letter combination in the organisation ID, should be put into the attribute during the creation of the object.
After filling in the necessary attributes in the template, and putting (or ) in the attribute, the object can now be sent to to actually create the object.
An example submission might look like this:
organisation: AUTO-1org-name: Ruritania Banking Interchangeorg-type: OTHERremarks: This is a dummy organisation object. DO NOT reference this object as it does not exist. Only for use in examples.address: 1 High Streetaddress: Polarcityaddress: Northern Nowherephone: +31 20 5354444e-mail: bit-bucket _at_ ripe _dot_ netadmin-c: HOHO15-RIPEtech-c: HOHO15-RIPEref-nfy: bit-bucket _at_ ripe _dot_ netmnt-ref: SANTA-MNTmnt-by: SANTA-MNTchanged: ripe-dbm _at_ ripe _dot_ net 20040419source: RIPE
The above submission could create the following object in the database:
organisation: ORG-RBI1-RIPEorg-name: Ruritania Banking Interchangeorg-type: OTHERremarks: This is a dummy organisation object. DO NOT reference this object as it does not exist. Only for use in examples.address: 1 High Streetaddress: Polarcityaddress: Northern Nowherephone: +31 20 5354444e-mail: bit-bucket _at_ ripe _dot_ netadmin-c: HOHO15-RIPEtech-c: HOHO15-RIPEref-nfy: bit-bucket _at_ ripe _dot_ netmnt-ref: RURITANIA-MNTmnt-by: SANTA-MNTchanged: ripe-dbm _at_ ripe _dot_ net 20040419source: RIPE
Please note that organisation objects with , , or can only be created by the RIPE NCC. Any other entity must use in the when creating organisation objects.

Информация о функционировании технологического портала WHOIS.UANIC.NAME:
Query Multiple Databases with the Global Resource Service
The RIPE Database only contains information related to IP addresses and ASNs that are managed by the RIPE NCC. So if you are querying for any random IP address that you would like more information on, you may get a specific result if the range is managed by the RIPE NCC, or you may find a that says the IP address belongs to a range managed by another Regional Internet Registry (RIR).
The RIPE NCC operates mirrors of the other RIRs’ databases as well as some of the major routing registries, known as the Global Resource Service (GRS). When enabling GRS, you can query for any resource and get an authoritative response from the appropriate source, which in addition to the RIPE Database includes:
-
- AFRINIC
- APNIC
- ARIN
- LACNIC
- JPIRR
- RADB
Because the RIPE NCC is bound by Dutch and European data privacy laws, we are obliged to remove all personal data received from other databases. This is either removed at the source or stripped out and deleted during the transformation process. The RIPE NCC does not store any personal data from other registries. Where necessary, we create and reference dummy objects to keep data integrity intact.
Before importing the data we transform objects into RIPE RPSL syntax by carrying out the following steps:
-
- Adding missing mandatory attributes
- Wrapping unrecognised attributes with «remarks»
- Creating dummy objects for missing data to keep referential integrity
- Converting attribute values
- All these transformations are marked by «End Of Line» comments in the objects
To use GRS from the web interface, select the appropriate radio button below the search box. When using telnet or the whois command line client, add the «—resource» flag to your query to query only the dummified GRS databases, or the «-a» flag to query all available databases, i.e. GRS sources and the original RIPE Database combined.

Using the API, you can specify one or multiple GRS source names as parameters, e.g. «source=arin-grs» or «source=arin-grs&source=apnic-grs». For more information, please refer to the documentation on Github.
What is a Whois Service?
ARIN offers public access to Internet resource registration data via a number of services. Traditionally, these services are known in the industry as “Whois” in reference to the public data service of ARPANET, the precursor of today’s modern Internet. Whois services are offered by all the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) like ARIN, most Internet Routing Registries (IRRs), and most domain name registries and registrars. The Whois protocol, originally specified in
RFC 3912, is a query and response protocol that is used for querying databases that store registered users or assignees of an Internet resource, such as IP addresses, Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs) or domain names. Whois is often referred to as “port 43” in reference to the TCP port number assigned by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) for the Whois protocol, and to differentiate it from other ways of getting Whois data.
