Defined by UTC Offset

Every place on Earth is measured in terms of its distance east or west of the prime meridian (0°longitude) in Greenwich, London, United Kingdom. This is also the reference point for Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) with 1 hour per 15 degrees longitude.

You have to divide the longitude, in degrees, by 15 to find the appropriate time zone, in hours. For example:

• At 150 degrees west (or 150° W) longitude, the time should be 150 degrees divided by 15 degrees = 10 hours behind UTC, or UTC-10.
• At 75 degrees east (or 75° E) longitude, the time would be 75 degrees divided by 15 degrees = 5 hours ahead of UTC, or UTC+5.

Generalized Time Zones in United States

The time zones in the contiguous US are often referred to by their generic name, without making a difference between standard time and Daylight Saving Time designations. For example, Eastern Time (ET) refers to Eastern Standard Time (EST) or Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), depending on which is currently in use. In practice, this means that the local time in these time zones changes when DST begins and ends.

The United States’ Time Zone History

The US was divided into 4 standard time zones on November 18, 1883, and jurisdiction for the zones was given to the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC). Since 1967, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) has been responsible for governing time zones in the country.

Time zones in the USA are defined in the U.S. Code, Title 15, Chapter 6, Subchapter IX — Standard Time. The time zones in the law are defined by their offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

There are 9 official time zones according to the law. In addition the uninhabited atolls of Baker Island (AoE) and Wake Island (WAKT) add to the time zone count, making 11 the total number of time zones in the US.

Almost all states in the US use Daylight Saving Time (DST). Most of Arizona and Hawaii don’t use DST. Indiana introduced DST in 2006.

Decree Time

In , following a period with several time zone shifts, clocks in all time zones were uniformly turned forward by 1 hour, effectively establishing year-round DST across the Soviet Union. This measure, referred to as Decree Time, was intended to save energy.

During the 1980s, a growing number of regions abolished Decree Time, and in , it was revoked across the entire country. However, it was soon reinstated in many areas. For example, the standard time in Moscow changed from UTC+3 to UTC+2 in —only to be returned to UTC+3 in . Decree Time also remains in force in some of the Soviet Union’s former republics.

Why does it show the wrong dates or times for DST clock changes?

The dates and times when Daylight Saving Time starts and ends in a country or territory can change at short notice. In some countries, reliable information is difficult to obtain or the authorities may issue conflicting information.

So, although our researchers work hard to make sure our DST information is correct, the most recent developments may not be reflected on the page yet or our sources may have reported false information. The time has the wrong format. How do I change between the 24-hour and AM/PM clock?

Our system supports both 24-hour and 12-hour (am/pm) clock formats. To change the format, please go to My Units and make a selection in the Time Format drop-down, and click Save Settings.

Why isn’t my state or town included?

We currently only offer separate pages for states, provinces, and territories for a few countries. These include the US, Canada, and Mexico.

As for cities and towns, our database of locations includes thousands of locations worldwide, and we now offer an additional 6 million places via the GeoNames database. If you still don’t find your town, please let us know and we will consider adding it.

The city search lists several places with the same name. Which is the one I’m looking for?

When you type the location into the search field and it suggests several places by the same name, first have a look at the country flag and the description in parentheses to identify the city you are looking for. If it is still unclear, click on one of the locations and check the geographical position on the map or click on the Time/General tab and check the longitude/latitude information show near the top of the page.

Timezone Core

The timezone project can be imported into your project and run by directly interfacing with the public methods, without needing to start the web service. Add the project as a dependency and create a new object, which can be interacted with through and including all local time and timezone information such as current time in the timezone and offset from GMT.
