Creation, Preparation and Selection of the Geometry
- In the first step, the polylines are created which represent the geometry that has to be cut:
- All contours must have a suitable start point. This must be a start point at which the contour can be approached using a lead in. For our example, this is not the case for the inner contour (the red reference point is the start point of the selected polyline):By right-clicking on the contour, the start point can be set to another position:Click on the new position of the start point. This can be an existing node, or any other point on the polyline. Here the center of the lower segment is selected:All contours are now ready for processing. With the function Select > Select All all start points of all contours can be highlighted (red):The circle is not a polyline, and may have its start point at any point.
- Select all the contours that are to be processed with the same machining parameters and the same tool. In this example, these are all the contours in the drawing.

- I use more than one computer / operating systems — how many licenses do I have to purchase?Licenses are per user, not per installation or system. With one single user license, you may install and use QCAD on multiple computers and multiple operating systems as long as you are the only user. All of our QCAD products give you access to QCAD packages for all supported platforms either through a download area or on DVD.

- Is QCAD Open Source Software?Yes, starting with version 3.1, the QCAD software is distributed under the GPLv3 with exceptions. In accordance with these exceptions, add-ons and plugins may be released under their respective licenses. For example the QCAD Pro add-on or the QCAD/CAM add-on are proprietary plugins.
- What is a Site License and when do I need one?If you are an individual who likes to purchase QCAD, you don’t need to worry about this. Simply purchase a single user license. A site license is a type of software license used by companies, universities and other organizations with 10 to 20 QCAD users. A QCAD site license allows an organization to install QCAD on up to 20 computers.Note that the software itself is identical. If you represent an organization and there are more than 10 people on your site (campus) who use QCAD, you will need at least one site license. If less than 10 people use the software, it is more cost effective to purchase individual single user licenses.

What types of packages / licenses do exist for QCAD?There are three different types of packages for the QCAD software:
- QCAD Professional is the latest version of QCAD with add-ons for advanced DXF support, DWG support and many extra tools and features. It can be purchased from our online shop.
- The QCAD Trial packages contain a trial version of QCAD Professional, intended to try the software before you buy it. You can download trial packages from our web site.
- The QCAD Community Edition is the basic QCAD system, released under an Open Source license. Some Linux distributions contain packages of this QCAD version.

Extending QCAD
Extending QCAD involves creating an ECMAScript file which adds a user interface component when QCAD is loaded. For example, if the extension is a new tool, the script might add a menu, tool bar button, command or keycode to launch that tool.
When the tool is launched, the same script starts to handle all user interaction to ‘do something’. It might for example show a dialog, ask for some user input, allow the user to specify a position in the drawing, etc. Based on those inputs the script might for example add or modify the contents of a drawing.

Typical use cases for extending QCAD through its script interface are:
- A tool that automatically generates a reusable component from some user given parameters and optionally lets the user position the component in the current drawing.
- A user interface component that displays an interactive drawing or shows information about the current drawing or selection in the drawing.
- A tool that generates a new drawing, based on the currently viewed drawing.
- Importers and exporters for new file formats.

Examples of existing QCAD extensions are:
Almost all tools and user interface components of the QCAD application are implemented as script add-ons. Some tools implement most of their functionality in ECMAScript (e.g. SVG exporter, property editor, drawing tools, modification tools, …) and other tools are mainly implemented in C++ but called through ECMAScript (e.g. DWG importer / exporter based on Teigha).
QCAD C++ Plugins
There are situations in which extending QCAD through scripts alone is not possible. This is mostly the case, if your extension is based on an existing C or C++ library. In that case, you can create a QCAD C++ plugin that wraps your library and adds the necessary hooks to access library functionality through the script interface. Such a plugin can be automatically loaded by QCAD on start up to add functions and classes to the script interface of QCAD. These script extensions can then be used by your script add-ons to make that functionality available as part of the application interface.
A plugin might for example offer export to a file format through an existing library for that format. The plugin registers itself as file exporter and becomes available as a format choice in the File — Save As dialog. Alternatively, it could register a script function to export a document (e.g. exportDocument(document, fileName)). This function could be called by a script add-on which is available through a new menu entry File — Export XY.

LibreCAD является форком свободной версии проекта QCad, разработчик которого уделяет внимание, в основном, собственническому варианту продукта. Разработка LibreCAD началась в 2010 году, как работа по созданию CAM для маршрутизатора ЧПУ, на основе QCad CE — свободной версии QCad, которая распространяется под лицензией
Но из-за того, что QCad CE использовал библиотеки Qt3 — устаревшую версию Qt, возникла настоятельная необходимость переноса на Qt4, что и было в первую очередь сделано. Затем планы расширились, и LibreCAD теперь имеет несколько особенностей, которые качественно отличают его от QCad, например лучшая поддержка кириллицы.
Первоначально проект назывался CADuntu, но это название многим не нравилось (в частности из-за того, что была похожа на название Ubuntu, к которому эта САПР не имеет никакого отношения, и звучало так, словно это специальный дистрибутив Linux для инженеров, на основе Ubuntu Linux). Поэтому в декабре 2010 CADuntu был переименован в LibreCAD.
Основными целями разработки LibreCAD был перевод программного кода QCad с устаревшей библиотеки Qt 3 на её современный вариант — Qt 4 и интеграции средств для экспорта данных в систему EMC2. В результате была проведена общая реструктуризация программного кода, выполнено портирование на Qt 4 и решено множество других проблем, неисправленных в QCad.
Первая стабильная версия LibreCAD вышла в декабре 2011. По заявлениям разработчиков, за счёт изменений в коде, скорость выполнения математических операций значительно увеличилась, также был сокращён и оптимизирован объём обрабатываемых данных. Реализована экспериментальная поддержка формата DWG. Добавлена поддержка автосохранения, улучшен интерфейс.
Создан программный интерфейс плагинов, через которые можно расширять функциональность LibreCAD. Разработана новая библиотека для работы с форматом DXF. Добавлена локализация интерфейса для 24 языков, появилась возможность использования utf-8 для слоев и имён блоков. Создан собственный формат шрифтов LFF, поскольку документация в QCad и используемые CXF-шрифты являются интеллектуальной собственностью компании, контролирующей разработку QCad. Создаётся документация.
Существуют пакеты для — и 64-разрядных ОС Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Mandriva, openSUSE), Haiku, Windows и Mac OS X.
Step 2: Print Preview
Choose File > Print Preview to switch to the print preview mode.
Adjusting the Scale

- If the desired scale for printing is known (e.g. 1:2, 1:10, 2:1, 200:1, etc.), adjust the scale to the accurate, desired scale (2:1 in this example) .If the desired scale of your drawing is not known or irrelevant, click the button to adjust the drawing scale to the chosen paper .
- Optionally, adjust the paper position using the tool Move Paper Position or use the button to center the drawing on the chosen paper(s) .
- To print in black / white or gray scale, click the appropriate icon in the options toolbar:
- Your drawing should be shown on a white paper as shown here:If your drawing is shown on a gray background, please check your paper and scaling settings again.If the purple rectangle crosses your drawing, please check the glue margins in the drawing preferences.

A Block is a group of entities. Blocks can be inserted into the same drawing more than once with different Attributes and at different locations and at a different scale and rotation angle (see image below) . Such an instance of a block is usually called an Insert. Inserts have attributes just like entities and layers. An Entity that is part of an Insert can have its own attributes or share the attributes of the Insert. Once created, Inserts are still linked to the Block they instantiate. The power of inserts is, that you can modify the Block once and all Inserts will be updated accordingly.

Requirements
Any QCAD user can start developing new tools and features for QCAD immediately.
All that is needed is a text editor and basic ECMAScript (JavaScript) skills.
A Teigha license is not required. Teigha provides DXF / DWG file format export and import and is included with every regular QCAD Professional user license. If your script add-on or application relies on DXF / DWG format support through Teigha, the user(s) of your add-on will require a QCAD Professional single user, site or server license.
A Qt license is not required. The Qt libraries and the ECMAScript interface to the Qt libraries are included with every regular QCAD installation.

What is the difference between the QCAD User Reference Manual and the book «QCAD — An Introduction to Computer-Aided Design»? There are two primary sources of documentation for QCAD:
- The QCAD User Reference Manual which is included with every installation of QCAD.
- The book / e-book «QCAD — An Introduction to Computer-Aided Design».
The user reference manual lists all available tools with brief usage instructions. The book / e-book is a complete introduction to QCAD and 2D CAD in general with many examples and step by step instructions, independent of the QCAD User Reference Manual. - How does the EU tax system apply when purchasing from RibbonSoft? RibbonSoft GmbH is a Swiss company registered in the EU under the EU’s MOSS (Mini One Stop Shop) scheme. MOSS allows us to account for VAT (normally due in multiple EU countries) in just one EU country, in our case the Netherlands.For all purchases from outside the EU (e.g. US, Canada, Asia, Africa, Switzerland, Norway, etc.), no taxes are collected from our side. If your country charges taxes over such purchases, you are responsible for handling these. For purchases from companies with a valid EU VAT number who are located in EU countries other than the Netherlands, the EU VAT reverse-charge mechanism applies. We do not collect taxes on such purchases but have to report them to the tax administration as Intra-Community transactions (ICP). For purchases from private customers and companies without a valid VAT number, who are located in any EU country, the VAT rate of the country in which the customer is located is charged.For purchases from companies with a valid VAT number who are located in the Netherlands, the Dutch VAT is charged.
