Peppermint OS 10
Peppermint OS 10:
Linux Kernel 4.18.0-18 (18.04 LTS HWE)
Nemo 4.0.6

History
Peppermint OS was initially conceived at the Black Rose Pub in Hendersonville, NC (North Carolina), USA during a night of drinking and discussion about the future of desktop Linux. Peppermint was originally designed to be a social media-centric distribution.
Pre-alpha development builds consisted of a wide array of potential directions before the decision to fork Lubuntu was made. There was quite a bit of experimentation with KDE, E17, Adobe Air, and several different code bases during January and February 2010. using the Lubuntu 10.04 code base started in March 2010. Peppermint was released to a small group of private in April 2010 where it remained private until the first .
- On May 9, 2010, Peppermint One was released. In less than a week, it received over 25,000 downloads. It soon outgrew its web host and switched to VPS.NET. VPS.NET became the first official sponsor of the Peppermint project.
- On June 20, 2010, Peppermint Ice was released. It sported Chromium as the default browser and featured a blue and black theme to distinguish it from Peppermint One.
- On June 10, 2011, Peppermint Two was released. Combining aspects from the two previous editions, it packaged Chromium as its default browser alongside the Ice application for creating Site Specific Browsers. It was also the first edition of Peppermint to be available in both 32 and 64 bit versions.
- On July 23, 2012, Peppermint Three was released. Chromium stable repository was enabled by default; very light theme and default artwork; fewer default web applications in the menu ; it shipped with GWoffice; and GIMP 2.8 was added to the Peppermint repository.
- On June 13, 2013, Peppermint Four was released. Peppermint Four was based on the Ubuntu 13.04 code base and used the LXDE desktop environment, but with instead of Openbox as the window manager. Example games, Entanglement and First Person Tetris, were added. Also added were some metapackages for popular tasks such as graphic arts and photography to the Featured section of the Software Manager.
- On June 23, 2014, Peppermint Five was released. “With this release we are getting ready for the future. The technology landscape is constantly changing, and we are always responding to meet our user’s needs. We are 100% driven to deliver an OS that is fast, secure, and available everywhere. Peppermint Five is another step in that direction.” — Shane Remington — COO of Peppermint OS, LLC
- On May 31, 2015, Peppermint Six was released. «Peppermint is excited to announce the launch of our latest operating system, Peppermint Six. Lightweight and designed for speed, Peppermint Six delivers on that promise whether using software on your desktop, online, or using cloud based apps. I want to take this opportunity to thank Mark Greaves, who stepped up and produced most of what you see here in Peppermint Six. Mark is now playing a major role here at Peppermint by leading the development team. I think you will be impressed by what he and the others have put together in Peppermint Six.» — Shane Remington — COO of Peppermint OS, LLC
- On June 24, 2016, Peppermint Seven was released. «Team Peppermint are pleased to announce our latest operating system Peppermint 7, it comes in both 32bit and 64bit editions with the latter having full UEFI/GPT/Secure Boot support baked in, a new version of Ice (our in house Site Specific Browser framework) is also included with full Firefox web browser support as well as Chromium / Chrome.» — Mark Greaves (PCNetSpec) — Development Team Leader & Support Admin
On January 14th 2020, Peppermint CEO Mark Greaves (PCNetSpec) died in hospital. After taking over Peppermint from Shane Remington and Kendall Weaver shortly after Peppermint 5, Mark devoted his life to Peppermint with his family’s support and went on to release more versions of Peppermint up to Peppermint 10 and a respin of Peppermint 10. The official announcement was made on the Peppermint forum and a memorial fund has been set up by his family to honour Mark’s legacy.
Design principles
Peppermint OS ships with few and a . What originally made Peppermint unique is its approach to creating a hybrid desktop that integrates both cloud and local applications. In place of traditionally native applications for common tasks (word processing, image editing), it ships with the custom Ice application to allow users to create site-specific browsers (SSB’s).
In Peppermint OS, the open-source Firefox browser is used as a way to enable a site-specific browser (SSB) for cloud applications. Instead of opening a browser and then visiting an application site, there is a dedicated browser window that is integrated into the system for a specific application. Support for the Firefox web browser (alongside Chromium and Chrome web browsers) was added to the custom Ice application in the fall of 2015, allowing the creation of SSB’s in a web browser window.
Peppermint OS is a project where you can marry the cloud to the desktop, as with any Ubuntu based OS it is possible for users to install applications natively from Ubuntu compatible repositories, allowing one to run cloud based applications right alongside desktop software. Like any other Linux distribution, one can install packages like LibreOffice, GIMP, VLC, Skype, etc. Peppermint is an Ubuntu spin and supports whatever Ubuntu supports. Peppermint OS ships with , Synaptic, and to facilitate this.
Nomenclature
Peppermint’s namesake is Linux Mint. The developers originally wanted to make use of configuration and utilities sourced from Linux Mint coupled with an environment that was less demanding on resources and more focused on web integration. They felt that the concept was a «spicier» version of Mint, so the name Peppermint was a natural fit.
While Linux Mint is known for its Cinnamon desktop, Peppermint uses a default desktop that is a hybrid based mainly on selected components from LXDE and XFCE that is significantly more lightweight.
Peppermint has been consistently releasing updates on a decent cadence since at least 2010, when it was first released.
Peppermint OS 10 Features
Peppermint OS 10 uses the LXDE desktop environment, but not in its traditional form. Instead of Openbox, it’s paired with Xfwm4 window manager and instead of LXDE panel it’s the XFCE panel with the (terrific) Whisker menu plugin.
Other key features in Peppermint OS 10:
- Linux Kernel 4.18.0-18 (18.04 LTS HWE)
- Nemo file manager 4.0.6
- Improved panel switching, with backup/restore
- New font DPI settings utility
- Menulibre for menu editing
- Proprietary Nvidia graphics drivers can be installed during install
- light-locker & light-locker-settings replaces i3lock
- network-manager-pptp-gnome installed by default
- New GTK themes + colour variants
- New default xfwm4 theme
- Several new wallpapers
- New login/lock screen and shutdown/startup screens
Despite the patchwork makeup, Peppermint OS is supremely customisable. If you fancy a dock with a top panel, or a dual-panel set-up, or something even more minimal, you can mix, match and create your own preferred desktop layout.
Have you tried Peppermint OS?
ICE, ICE, Baby
Another area where Peppermint OS diverges from distro norms is in its support for “Site Specific Browsers” (aka SSBs).
SSB is the fancy name given to “web shortcuts” that integrate into the system menus and run in their own dedicated window (rather than a new browser tab).
The ‘ICE” utility in Peppermint OS
Using a bespoke utility called ICE, Peppermint OS lets you create shortcuts for any web-based apps and services you like, such as Google Docs, Twitter Lite, Spotify Web Player, Photopea and more.
A nice touch is that SSBs you create in ICE can be opened in SSBs powered by Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Chromium, or Vivaldi web. The tool also lets you quickly view all installed SSBs and remove those no longer required.
Go Native
Peppermint OS’ emphasis on ‘making the system your own’ is reflected in the minimal amount of pre-installed software that comes bundled on the disk image — i.e. not much!
Should you prefer using native desktop Linux apps like LibreOffice, GIMP and VLC you still have the option to install them (as well as any other app in the Ubuntu repos). Just use GNOME Software, the Linux Mint Software Manager or the hardy Synaptic package manager — they’re all included!

Among the native apps which are included in Peppermint OS 10 are Xreader (replacing Evince) and Xplayer (based on Totem).
The Menulibre menu editing utility is newly added too, as is a brand font DPI settings tool.

Release Notes for Peppermint 10
- Peppermint 10 makes use of the Xfwm4 window manager, and Xfce bottom panel in the LXDE desktop environment. This is unlike other Linux distributions that use LXDE as the default desktop environment where it is common to use the Openbox window manager, and lxpanel. As a result, there are more window manager features, however some things within the window manager settings and some Xfce panel plugins may not function 100% as intended to in their native Xfce desktop environment.
Software ratings within the Software Manager (mintinstall) are based on feedback submitted by users to the website https://community.linuxmint.com. This website is part of the Linux Mint project and is not affiliated with Peppermint or Peppermint OS, however we do encourage Peppermint users to submit feedback as we all benefit from this feedback.
Peppermint 10 is built on the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS code base and makes use of its package repositories. As a result, any bugs that affect Ubuntu 18.04 may potentially affect Peppermint 10. Please report bugs for Ubuntu’s packages to the necessary bug trackers and please report bugs for Peppermint specific packages to Peppermint’s bug tracker.
The Peppermint Settings Panel, Peppermint Control Center, and Ubiquity installation slideshow do not yet support languages other than US English. This will hopefully be addressed in the future.
Electing to go straight to the installer or OEM install option when booting into the ISO file may result in a very minor visual anomaly where the background image doesn’t always display. This issue has no functional effect on the installed system.
Certain peripherals manufactured by Logitech can cause an additional battery icon to appear on the panel when they’re connected. This is due to the system reading their batteries. This has no negative affects on the function of the system.
Electing to encrypt your home folder during the installation process results in the system not presenting a mount key upon first boot. Running the command:
and entering your system password will result in the presentation of the key.
Whilst the 64bit version of Peppermint 10 supports both UEFI and Secureboot, electing to install 3rd party software that doesn’t contain a valid key during the install may fail with Secureboot enabled. We advise you either disable Secureboot during the installation or do not choose to install 3rd party software during the installation.
Firefox is known to have issues with dark gtk themes and some websites, such as the Youtube search box displaying white text on a white background and therefore being unreadable, we’ve included a fix for this that locks Firefox to the Peppermint-10-Red-Dark theme .. if you want to unlock/lock the Firefox theme you’ll find the ‘Firefox Theme Lock’ application either in the menu or in the new Peppermint Settings Panel, unlocking the Firefox theme will result in Firefox using the current system wide gtk theme.
There is also a “Thunderbird Theme Lock” in the Peppermint Settings Panel for the same reason.
The Numix Folders utility may not always work properly in a “Live” environment.
Keeping a home folder from a previous version will result in missing configuration files because they cannot be copied from /etc/skel during the account setup stage, so it is advisable to only do a full clean install of Peppermint 10, or (where keeping a /home partition from a previous version) to create a new user account with a different name than any currently held accounts.
(you can then copy any user files such as docs/pics/music/etc. across to the new account)
The OEM Install option on the 64bit ISO fails to create a “Prepare for shipping to end user” desktop icon during the configuration phase. This has no functional effect on the OEM install itself, it just requires you run:
in a terminal instead of clicking the missing desktop icon. Please see the OEM Install page for details,
Playback of commercial DVD’s in the new Xplayer will require the installation of the libdvd-pkg package and xubuntu-restricted-extras, we cannot distribute these packages for legal reasons but you can elect to install them manually with the following commands:

Nomenclature
Peppermint’s namesake is Linux Mint. The developers originally wanted to make use of configuration and utilities sourced from Linux Mint coupled with an environment that was less demanding on resources and more focused on web integration. They felt that the concept was a «spicier» version of Mint, so the name Peppermint was a natural fit.

Peppermint has been consistently releasing updates on a decent cadence since at least 2010, when it was first released.
First Impression – Look, and Feel
The Look and Feel of Peppermint Linux OS is traditional and pretty. It’s a well-integrated combination of various components taken from different Linux desktop environments. Though the base desktop session comes from LXDE, it has also well-merged some element from Linux Mint Cinnamon and Xfce desktop environment. The app menu and bottom panel come from the Xfce, file manager Nemo and software store are taken from Linux Mint Cinnamon.
Peppermint setting panel provides a set of versatile tools to configure all most everything starting from the look and feel of the windows and desktop, hardware, update setting etc. Update manager and command line tool are effortless to use.

For installing software in Peppermint OS, there are many ways to follow. It supports Deb packages and PPA for installing software that’s not available in the repository and need to get it from outside. Software manager and synaptic package manager are there as a GUI for easy software installation. Moreover, it also supports Snap and Flatpak as universal package manager. Peppermint Linux comes with GDebi for installing Deb packages.
