MySQL LIKE operator with ESCAPE clause

Sometimes the pattern, which you want to match, contains wildcard character e.g., 10%, _20, etc. In this case, you can use the clause to specify the escape character so that MySQL will interpret the wildcard character as a literal character. If you don’t specify the escape character explicitly, the backslash character is the default escape character.

For example, if you want to find products whose product codes contain the string , you can use the pattern as shown in the following query:

Or you can specify a different escape character e.g., by using the clause:

The pattern matches any string that contains the string.

MySQL LIKE operator examples

Let’s practice with some examples of using the operator. We will use the following table from the sample database for the demonstration:

A) Using MySQL with the percentage (%) wildcard examples

This example uses the operator to find employees whose first names start with :

This example uses the operator to find employees whose last names end with e.g., , :

If you know the searched string is embedded inside in the middle of a string, you can use the percentage ( ) wildcard at the beginning and the end of the pattern.

For example, to find all employees whose last names contain , you use the following query with the pattern

B) Using MySQL with underscore( ) wildcard examples

To find employees whose first names start with  , end with , and contain any single character between e.g., , , you use the underscore (_) wildcard to construct the pattern as follows:

C) Using MySQL operator with the operator example

The MySQL allows you to combine the operator with the operator to find a string that does not match a specific pattern.

Suppose you want to search for employees whose last names don’t start with the character , you can use the with a pattern as shown in the following query:

Note that the pattern is not case sensitive, therefore, the or pattern returns the same result.

The SQL LIKE Operator

The LIKE operator is used in a WHERE clause to search for a specified pattern in a column.

There are two wildcards often used in conjunction with the LIKE operator:

  • % — The percent sign represents zero, one, or multiple characters
  • _ — The underscore represents a single character

Note: MS Access uses an asterisk (*) instead of the percent
sign (%), and a question mark (?) instead of the underscore (_).

The percent sign and the underscore can also be used in combinations!

LIKE Syntax

SELECT column1, column2, …
FROM table_name
WHERE columnN LIKE pattern;

Tip: You can also combine any number of conditions using AND or OR operators.

Here are some examples showing different LIKE operators with ‘%’ and ‘_’ wildcards:

WHERE CustomerName LIKE ‘%a’ Finds any values that end with «a»
WHERE CustomerName LIKE ‘%or%’ Finds any values that have «or» in any position

WHERE CustomerName LIKE ‘a_%’ Finds any values that start with «a» and are at least 2 characters in length
WHERE CustomerName LIKE ‘a__%’ Finds any values that start with «a» and are at least 3 characters in length
WHERE ContactName LIKE ‘a%o’ Finds any values that start with «a» and ends with «o»
