The Ubuntu MATE backstory

Although Ubuntu MATE technically began with Martin Wimpress and Alan
Pope’s sitting around the latter’s kitchen table, it first started years
earlier, with Martin’s quest to restore ‘wedded bliss’ to his home and
his wife’s desktop environment.

At that time, Martin was an Arch developer (disclaimer: we were required
to say that), and he and his wife were mostly happy using an “embryonic”
GNOME 3. A few years after the birth of their first child, Martin’s wife
came back to a more fully fledged GNOME 3, and gave her husband a
directive: make GNOME 2 come back.

Martin knew the MATE Desktop, a continuation of GNOME 2, existed, but
had never actually used it before. He installed MATE on the household
computers and all was again well, but he noticed a few issues beneath
the surface. Knowing a happy wife equaled a happy life, Martin did what
any Linux-using husband would do: he began contributing to the MATE
Desktop. At first, this was low-key, mostly packaging for Arch, but then
he began to make patches and fixes upstream. He also began installing
the MATE Desktop for family members who weren’t as technically
proficient, who mainly wanted ease of use and continuity.

As Martin became more involved with the MATE Desktop, he also became
more involved in the world of Linux podcasting. He became an occasional
talking head on Linux Unplugged, which
nicely dovetailed with his new role as a community manager for the MATE
Desktop. This meant he started doing more interviews, one of which was
on the Ubuntu Podcast in 2012 or 2013.
During the interview Martin pointed out how MATE was rather broken in
Ubuntu, which saddened Alan Pope, one of the shows’ hosts, for anyone
unfamiliar with the podcast. He’s still there, along with Mark Johnson
and…gasp!…Martin.

Troubleshooting

When you get this error (see ~/.materc-errors), it is usually preceded by a warning, fixing the warning could fix the problem; for example, when I get to see:

In this case, you can resolve this by moving away the desktop file or fixing it up by adding the Name key. If you want a clean start, you can move those files out of the way by backing them up:

Upgrading from Ubuntu MATE 18.04 LTS or 19.10

You can upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS from either Ubuntu MATE 18.04 LTS or Ubuntu
19.10. Ensure that you have all updates installed for your current version of
Ubuntu MATE before you upgrade.

• Open the “Software & Updates” from the Control Center.
• Select the 3rd Tab called “Updates”.
• Set the “Notify me of a new Ubuntu version” drop down menu to “For long-term support versions” if you are using 18.04 LTS; set it to “For any new version” if you are using 19.10.
• Press Alt+F2 and type in into the command box.
• Update Manager should open up and tell you: New distribution release ‘20.04’ is available.
• Click “Upgrade” and follow the on-screen instructions.

There are no offline upgrade options for Ubuntu MATE. Please ensure you have
network connectivity to one of the official mirrors or to a locally accessible
mirror and follow the instructions above.

Ubuntu MATE becomes an official flavour

Ubuntu MATE 14.10 was the inaugural release,
and it didn’t take long for wider adoption to follow. With the release of
15.04, Ubuntu MATE was now an official Ubuntu community flavour.
In 2015, Entroware announced it would offer
Ubuntu MATE as a pre-install choice to its customers — the first example
of an OEM supporting a boutique independent distribution. Incidentally,
this made Martin’s job as family IT support much easier, as he could
simply point curious relatives to buy a laptop with the operating system
he “basically designed for them pre-installed.”

Способы заваривания чая

Само название напитка в переводе означает «посуда из тыквы». И на самом деле правильное чаепитие основывается на том, что заваривают его и пьют из калабаса (или калебаса), изготовленного из тыковки-горлянки. Эта специальная тыква сорта лагенария обыкновенная. Считается, что в круглой ёмкости с небольшим отверстием сверху чай лучше сохраняет свои полезные свойства.

Важным аспектом считается вода для чая. Она должна быть максимально мягкой, без примесей. Нельзя использовать кипяток – он разрушает витамины и микроэлементы и добавляет в напиток горечи.

Классический способ

Правило заваривания мате, дошедшие до нас, гласит:

1. калебас на 2 трети заполняют сухим чаем мате;

2. содержимое слегка смачивают кипячёной тёплой водой;

3. смесь встряхивают, чтобы смочить заварку;

4. оставляют разбухать на 3 минуты;

5. вставляют в смесь бомбилью (специальную трубочку);

6. доливают в калебас кипячёной воды, остуженной до 80 градусов;

7. настаивают чай 1-2 минуты.

Мате не пьют традиционным способом из посуды, прикасаясь к ней губами. Употребляют его исключительно через бомбилью – трубочку со сплющенным мундштуком, предотвращающей попадание в рот чаинок.

Считается, что запаривать одну и ту же смесь без потери вкуса и свойств можно до девяти раз.

Важно! При заваривании классическим способом экстрагируется до 75 % полезных веществ, при использовании способа с использованием чайника и чашки около 35 %.

Простой метод без калабаса и бомбильи

Обойтись без калебаса бомбильи можно, воспользовавшись туркой и обычным чайным ситечком. Тогда мате так же заливают сначала прохладной водой, затем запаривают остуженным до 80 градусов кипятком, настаивают и разливают по чашкам, процеживая.

Соотношение ингредиентов таково: на литр воды требуется 5 столовых ложек сухого чая.

При заваривании без разбухания теряются многие вкусовые качества напитка.

Важно! Как и почти все чаи, повторно заваривать мате можно лишь в течение часа — полутора, после первичного запаривания. Хранить заварку дольше нельзя, поскольку в ней образуются вредные для человека вещества.

Холодный напиток

Заваренный обычным способом чай процеживают и остужают не дольше часа. Можно добавить в напиток кубики льда, ваниль, фруктовый или ягодный сок, мяту, лимон. Сладкоежкам можно добавить в чай сахар или мёд.

Молочный мате

Как из большинства зелёных чаев, из мате тоже готовят напиток на молоке. Этот напиток имеет оригинальный вкус и полезен.

Для приготовления используют пол-литра прокипячённого и охлаждённого до 60 градусов молока и 2 столовых ложки сухого чая. После настаивания 2-3 минуты, мате разливают через ситечко в чашки.

Далее по вкусу можно сделать сладкий чай либо солёный.

Любителям оригинальных вкусов можно положить в чашку щепотку соли и кусочек сливочного масла. Так традиционно готовят зелёный чай многие мусульманские народы. Этот молочный напиток будет сытнее обычного.

VR games right from your Raspberry Pi.

Redirecting audio output

The sound will output to HDMI by default if both HDMI and the 3.5mm audio jack
are connected. You can, however, force the system to output to a particular
device.

Notification Center

Ubuntu MATE 20.04 includes a new Indicator that provides a “notification
center” We worked with the upstream developer to add new features
to indicator-notifications
and integrate it with MATE Notifications Daemon.

We now have a notification center that also offers a “do not disturb”
feature. When do not disturb is enabled, notifications will be muted and captured in the notification center for review. It’s also
possible to blacklist some notifications, so they are never stored by the
notification center. I’ve created an icon theme for the notification center so
it fits the look and feel of the default Ubuntu MATE theme. Notification hints
are also fixed so any notifications supplying additional media, such as
sounds or icons, now work.

Unsupported Raspberry Pi

• These images will not work on any Raspberry Pi model using an ARMv6 instruction set:
  • Raspberry Pi 1 Model A+
  • Raspberry Pi 1 Model B+
  • Raspberry Pi Zero
  • Raspberry Pi Zero W

Memory pressure is reasonable using the images (~350MB at idle)
but quite tight on the images (~490MB at idle). As always,
microSDHC I/O throughput is a bottleneck on the Raspberry PPi so don’t
gimp your Raspberry Pi by cheaping out on poor performing microSDHC
cards. We used the Samsung EVO Plus 32 GB microSDHC UHS-I U1
and Kingston 64 GB microSDXC Canvas Go Plus
during the testing of these images and they significantly better
performance than most other microSDHC cards we’ve tried.
But don’t take our word for it.

You’ll need a microSD card which is 8GB or greater to fit the image.
The file system will automatically resize to occupy the unallocated
space of the microSD card. Here is our recommended kit lists on Amazon:

Known Issues

• The GRUB2 menu is rotated 90 degrees on the GPD Pocket, MicroPC and Topjoy Falcon.
• The built in speaker in the GPD Pocket is mono and doesn’t play audio from the right channel.

GPD Pocket 2

• The boot menu is not displayed in the GPD Pocket 2 live media.
  • The workaround is to wait and the system will boot after a few seconds or press Enter to boot immeditately.
  • However, GRUB is fully functional and usable post-install.

• The Plymouth splash screen is not rotated.

Disable desktop session scaling

If you want to restore the full native resolution of display then open
Startup Applications from the Control Center. Find the entry called
GPD Pocket Display Scaler in the Startup Programs tab and untick it.
Log out and back in and the full 1920×1200 resolution is restored.

Accessing UMPC boot menus

Switch the device on, immediately hold the Fn key and tap the F12 key until the Boot Manager screen appears.

What works

The Ubuntu MATE images for the UMPCs adds the following tweaks:

• Enable frame buffer and Xorg display rotation

  Supports modesetting and xorg-video-intel display drivers.

• Enable scroll wheel emulation for Xorg.

• Enable double size console (tty) font resolution.
• Enable resolution scaling for 1920×1200 displays. (MATE Desktop only)
  • Results in an effective resolution of 1280×800 to make the small display panels easily readable.
  • Simple to disable if you want to restore full resolution.
• GRUB is usable post-install.
  • GPD Pocket, WIN 2, MicroPC & TopJoy Falcon GRUB is rotated 90 degress, but functional.
  • GPD Pocket 2 GRUB is correctly rotated and functional.
• GPD Pocket BRMC4356 WiFi firmware enabled by default.
• GPD Pocket fan control kernel module enable by default.
