Antivirus

If you’re used to antivirus products trying to win you over with stacks of bonus features, F-Secure Anti-Virus will be a surprise, because it doesn’t have any. There’s barely anything here beyond antivirus scanning and the related security layers and settings. 

This approach pays off with F-Secure’s interface, which is just about as simple and straightforward as you’ll ever see. The main console has two buttons: Virus Scan and Settings. Tap the first and F-Secure Anti-Virus runs a very quick scan (under a minute on our test system), deals with any threats automatically and displays its verdict. Tapping the Settings button reveals a very minimal set of configuration options.

Experienced users might be a little frustrated by the lack of features and control. F-Secure doesn’t give you a choice of scan types on its main console, for instance, running a quick scan by default. There is a full system scan, if you can track it down (it’s tucked away behind the Virus Scan Options button.)

There’s no removable drive scan here, no option to create a custom scan type of your own. And while competitors like Avast and Avira have a mass of manual scan tweaks and configuration options, F-Secure has just two simple checkboxes: ‘Scan only known file types’, and ‘Scan inside compressed files.’

You can run targeted scans by right-clicking a file, folder or drive and choosing Scan For Viruses. These are speedy, even initially, and get faster in subsequent runs. The app checked 50GB of executables in around 16 minutes at first, for instance, dropping to 141 seconds when we checked again.

F-Secure isn’t very smart at handling parallel scans. If a scan is running, and you right-click a removable drive to check it, the app just switches to the active scan window. It doesn’t scan the removable drive, or tell you it can’t do that, so you’re left to yourself to figure out what’s going on.

You probably won’t want to run simultaneous scans very often, but if you do, this is going to be a hassle, and some vendors handle the situation very differently. For example, Kaspersky allows you to run right-click and main scans at the same time, and uses separate scan windows to display their progress, making them easy to follow.

There is one small but worthwhile extra in F-Secure’s ransomware protection feature, which prevents untrusted applications from accessing files in whatever folders you’d like to keep safe. This isn’t a particularly new or unusual idea — Windows 10’s new ‘controlled folder access’ feature does much the same thing — but it’s still a handy extra layer of ransomware-blocking protection.

Overall, F-Secure handles its core antivirus function very well, being speedy, accurate and user-friendly. 

The lack of URL blocking is a downside, but keep in mind that you’re still protected by other layers. When we clicked a link to a malicious file, for example, F-Secure detected it just like it would any local file. Similarly, when we tried to access a page containing a crypto miner script, F-Secure allowed the HTML page to download, but then detected the threat within the file before it was able to launch. Even without URL blocking, you’re still very well defended.

Если вы читаете этот обзор, чтобы найти VPN для работы с Netflix или торрентами, то мы вас разочаруем: F-Secure с таким не связывается, более того — сервис очень серьезно относится к жалобам DMCA.

Что же в итоге? Freedome VPN не гарантирует доступ к популярным стрим-сервисам, а что же до P2P, то на определенных серверах эти сети поддерживаются, однако сам сервис такую активность не поощряет. В общем, мы вас предупредили. F-Secure утверждает, что не может определить, когда торренты скачиваются законно, а когда — нет, так что все на ваш страх и риск.

Иными словами, Freedome VPN служит сугубо для шифрования вашего подключения и обеспечения надежного доступа к Сети, но и запросы третьих сторон при этом не остаются без внимания. Все это четко, внятно и доступно указано в политике конфиденциальности сервиса и условиях предоставления услуг, и, в общем-то, в этом плане упрекнуть сервис нельзя.

Зато этот VPN создал для пользователей приложение с отличным дизайном, он не ведет логи подключений и собрал одну из самых обширных баз знаний, какие мы только видели (подробнее об этом читайте далее).

Увы, продвинутых функций (например, экстренного отключения от сети) здесь нет, однако общее качество работы Freedome VPN достаточно стабильно, чтобы это минусом не считалось.

Кроме того, сервис предоставляет высокую скорость подключения, 5-дневный бесплатный пробный период и 30-дневную гарантию возврата денег, что делает Freedome VPN от F-Secure тем самым сервисом, который обязательно стоит испытать в деле, если вы хотите защитить свою интернет-приватность.

Сначала вирус, потом антивирус

Антивирусы появились в ответ на создание вирусов. В целом так происходит и по сей день: сначала вирусописатель создаёт трояна, червя и им подобных. И только потом запись о нём добавляется в базу, разрабатывается лекарство, обновление безопасности для операционной системы и т.п.

Это сигнатурный метод обнаружения – вирус определяется по сигнатуре (описанию) из базы.

Есть, конечно, такая штука, как эвристический анализ, который использует большинство продвинутых антивирусов. В процессе анализа антивирус контролирует все действия, которые выполняет «подопытная» программа. Если обнаруживается подозрительная активность (действия, которые характерны для вирусов), программа блокируется.

Проактивная (поведенческая, превентивная) защита как раз работает на базе эвристического анализа. Она содержит базу данных наборов правил, которые описывают поведение каждой программы: что она должна делать, а что не должна.

При эвристическом анализе и проактивной защите антивирус не сравнивает код с образцом, а исследует поведение программы.

Такой подход позволяет, с одной стороны, снизить нагрузку на ресурсы устройства (потому что проверяется не всё подряд, а только активные программы), с другой – распознать вирусы, которых ещё нет в базе.

А ещё есть веб-защита, блокировка динамического содержимого в браузерах, анализ куков, виртуализация браузера, антифишинг и другие плюшки…

Проблема в том, что на каждую гайку найдётся болт с левой резьбой. Вирусописатели тоже не лыком шиты. Разрабатывая вирусы, они тестируют их на свежих версиях антивирусов, проверяют в сервисе VirusTotal и всячески минимизируют шансы обнаружить своё детище. И маскируются они, надо сказать, здорово, раз вирусы до сих пор повсюду.

Вирусы, которые прячутся в картинках

В августе 2017 года по сети стал распространяться троян SyncCrypt, который прятался в легитимных изображениях. Он запросто обходил антивирусы, а затем вымогал у пользователей деньги (429 долларов) за возвращение доступа к данным.

Вредонос рассылали в спам-письмах с WSF-вложениями, замаскированными под судебный приказ. После открытия вложения встроенный JScript якобы загружал с внешнего сайта несколько изображений. В них содержались компоненты SyncCrypt, помещенные в ZIP-файл.

Заражение происходило после того, как JScript разархивировал файлы sync.exe, readme.png и readme.html (названия могли отличаться). Но если бы пользователь напрямую перешел по URL и открыл изображения, то увидел бы просто обложку альбома «& They Have Escaped the Weight of Darkness» исландского певца Олафура Арнальдса.

Фактически Windows выполняет незапланированное задание – Sync. Исполняемый файл после запуска начинал сканировать компьютер, шифрует файлы с помощью AES-алгоритма и встроенного публичного ключа RSA-4096 и менял расширения на .kk. Важные системны папки (windows, program files (x86), program files, programdata, winnt, system volume information, desktop\readme, $recycle.bin) вирус почему-то пропускал.

По данным ViruseTotal, только один из 58 антивирусов смог обнаружить вирус. Но ваш ли? Вопрос риторический.

WannaCry показал, насколько мы защищены

Атака WannaCry, о которой стало известно 12 мая 2017 года, показала реальную ситуацию с кибербезопасностью в мире. Компьютеры в больницах, школах, полиции, государственных учреждениях, не говоря уже о домашних ПК, блокировались в 99 странах мира. Эксперты заявили: в заражении виноваты сами пользователи. О вирусе стало известно в феврале, в марте Microsoft выпустила обновление, которое не давало заразиться WannaCry. Кто не обновился, получил требование выкупа – 300-600 долларов в биткоинах.

Атаку остановили совершенно случайно. Вирус обращался к домену iuqerfsodp9ifjaposdfjhgosurijfaewrwergwea.com, и как только автор твиттера @MalwareTechBlog зарегистрировал его на себя, вирус не смог больше работать. Но через время пошла вторая волна атаки – вирус перестал зависеть от сайта.

Помог ли антивирус? Нет, не помог.

Следующей бомбой стал вирус Petya/NotPetya. С 27 июня он наследил в 64 странах. Виноватым назначили софт M.E.Doc. Отключалось всё: банки, кафе, отделения служб доставки, магазины… Заражение также происходило через электронную почту – при открытии вложения из письма.

Помог антивирус? И снова нет. Хотя штатный Windows Defender был способен распознать угрозу, как утверждает Microsoft.

Final verdict

F-Secure Anti-Virus is fairly priced, compact and easy to use, but a distinct shortage of features, some unexpected review issues and a recent set of poor test results make it difficult to recommend right now.

F-Secure SAFE extends the company’s antivirus package with URL filtering, banking protection, parental controls and additional apps to protect Mac, Android and iOS devices.

These are all useful features, but they still leave us feeling a little underwhelmed. URL filtering comes as standard with most baseline antivirus packages, for instance — it doesn’t normally require a paid upgrade. And moving up from antivirus usually gets you many more features than you’ll see here. Bitdefender Internet Security includes a firewall, spam filter, webcam protection, a microphone monitor, and a bunch of smaller privacy extras (password manager, file shredder, simple encryption tool, wireless network scanner, more.)

Opting for F-Secure may not save you much cash, either. Bitdefender Internet Security 2020’s three device, one-year license is priced at $40 in year one, $80 on renewal; the equivalent F-Secure figures are only marginally cheaper at $35 and $70.

Still, if you only need the security basics, F-Secure’s simpler and more lightweight approach may be an advantage, and it’s certainly worth taking a look at the suite’s additional features.

Дополнительные компоненты в антивирусе G Data Internet Security 2015 раскиданы так, будто их вбросили на вентилятор. Я кое-как собрал все в кучку и запилил жутковатого вида картинку. Я вам уже говорил, что у меня всегда было три по рисованию?Родительский контроль. Позволяет блокировать доступ выбранного пользователя Windows к определенной категории сайтов, ограничивать время использования компьютера и интернета. С этим компонентом у меня возникла проблема. У меня отсутствовали предустановленные правила для веб-сайтов. Должно быть вот так.А у меня это окно было пустое, помогла переустановка G Data Internet Security 2015. Похоже я что-то сломал, когда проводил свой примитивный краш-тест. Какой-то нежный антивирус получается.Менеджер автозапуска. Позволяет задавать задержку запуска программ, стартующих при загрузке системы. Также с помощью этого компонента можно вообще запретить программе автозагрузку, только сначала нужно перенести ее в окно программ с задержкой, и там уже запрещать. Неудобно.Загрузочный носитель. Позволяет создавать загрузочный диск с антивирусом для аварийной проверки системы. Дополнительные программы для создания образа не требуются.Уничтожитель файлов. По сути отдельная программа, установленная вместе с G Data Internet Security 2015. Она умеет безвозвратно удалять файлы с жесткого диска. Вызывается нажатием правой кнопкой мыши на файле.

Настройка антивируса

Настраивать в G Data Internet Security 2015 практический нечего. По умолчанию он уже настроен на высокий уровень защиты и использует оба антивирусных движка. Можно лишь нанести пару финальных штрихов. Жмем в главном окне программы на шестеренку и смотрим настройки.

1. Антивирус — защита в реальном времени. Меняем «Запрашивать действие» на «Лечить, если лечение невозможно поместить на карантин».
2. Антивирус — проверка на вирусы вручную. Делает тоже самое, что и в пункте 1.
3. Антивирус — интернет защита — дополнительно. Убираем галку с «Ограничение размера загрузок».

AV-Comparatives Real-World Protection Test сравнивает 16 лучших антивирусных движков с некоторыми из самых последних вредоносных программ, а затем подробно объясняет, кто вышел на первое место.

Итоговый отчет за июль-октябрь 2019 года не был хорошей новостью для F-Secure, поскольку компания заняла неутешительное 13-е место, опередив Касперского..

Это стало настоящим сюрпризом, поскольку F-Secure обычно очень хорошо справляется с этими тестами (он входил в топ-5 по более раннему отчету за 2019 г. и по обоим отчетам за 2018 г.)

AV-Comparatives Real-World Protection Test pits 16 top antivirus engines against some of the very latest malware, then explains in detail who’s come out on top.

The July-October 2019 summary report wasn’t good news for F-Secure, with the company scrambling to a disappointing 13th place, just ahead of Kaspersky.

This was a real surprise, as F-Secure normally does very well in these tests (it was in the top 5 for the earlier 2019 report, and for both 2018 reports.) With Kaspersky also seeing a major downgrade this time — first place in the last report, 14th here — we’re going to treat these results cautiously, and see if they’re confirmed by the next report.

We had no issues with F-Secure Anti-Virus in our own testing. It detected our local malware samples without difficulty, spotted others inside archives and identified and stopped dangerous downloads — everything we could ask.

Malicious URL filtering

F-Secure’s Secure Browsing feature uses a combination of browser extension and network-level technologies to protect you from web threats.

This starts by displaying a ‘reputation rating’ icon next to every link in your Google, Bing and Yahoo! search results. Restrict your clicks to URLs with a green tick for ‘safe’ and you’ll immediately avoid some risks.

A second layer of protection can block known harmful sites, as well as ‘suspicious’ websites or anything with ‘prohibited content’ (depending on possible parental control settings.) 

The feature is reasonably configurable, handy if you find it blocks legitimate sites. If a link is falsely flagged, you’re able to add it to an Exceptions list in a click or two. And if you still run into a few hassles, you can reduce detection sensitivity by keeping blocking for harmful sites, but turning off ‘suspicious’ website blocking.

Parental controls

F-Secure’s Family Rules technology is a basic parental controls system which enables setting screen time limits, blocking access to websites by content type, and (on Android and iOS) locating lost or stolen devices.

Device usage can be restricted to a total amount of time per day. This can range from 15 minutes to 8 hours, but you’re forced to choose from a small number of preset times. For example, if a 3-hour restriction isn’t quite enough, your next options are 3 hours 30 minutes, 4 hours, then 5, 6, 7 and 8. Would it really be so difficult to allow a user to enter a specific number of minutes?

All these settings are applied to a specific device, too (or a user account on a device, for PCs.) If your child has two or more devices, you’ll need to set them up individually, and think carefully about how any usage time should be split.

Although you’re not able to define when during the day your child should use his time allowance, a Bedtime feature limits device use during nighttime. You’re able to set when the device is turned off and becomes available in the morning, although again, SAFE limits the time you choose. (If the default 7am is fractionally too early, for instance, you can’t set it to 7:15 or 7:45; your next choices are 7:30 or 8pm.)

A simple content filtering system enables blocking access to websites by their type. This only has 14 categories (Adult, Drugs, Gambling, Violence, Social Networking and so on) so is quick and easy to use, although doesn’t give you much opportunity for fine-tuning.

F-Secure’s Finder is a simple anti-theft service which enables finding your lost Android and iOS devices.

SAFE for Android also supports remote device wiping and locking, useful if you suspect your device isn’t coming back any time soon.

Family Rules is easy to use, but very short on features. If you’re happy with the parental controls basics, it might just about be enough, but everyone else will be better off elsewhere.

Итоговый отзыв. Выводы по обзору антивируса

И так, начнем с приятного. Чем же хорош G Data Internet Security 2015. Во-первых, это очень высокий уровень сигнатурного обнаружения — результат работы двух движков. Во-вторых, это качественная защита от кейлоггеров, правда распространяется она только на ввод данных в браузере. В третьих, в нем есть все необходимое: проактивная защита, веб-антивирус, файервол.А теперь пара ведер дегтя. Интерфейс нуждается в доработке. Сам принцип вкладочности удобен, но раскидано по этим вкладкам все настолько хаотично, что стает непонятно какие компоненты вообще есть в антивирусе. Главное окно G Data Internet Security 2015 очень широкое и никак не сжимается, окно ручного обновления нельзя свернуть, оставив при этом процесс обновления активным. В настройках абсолютно непонятно какой из движков останется работать, если выбрать параметр «Только один».

Проактивная защита вообще не имеет настроек и не реагирует на потенциально опасные программы. Самозащита далека от совершенства, и при удалении папки с файлами графической оболочки G Data Internet Security 2015 начинает вытворять чудеса. Ощущается небольшая задержка при запуске даже стандартных программ Windows (на одном ядре от i5 2320 и при 1.5 Гб ОЗУ). Это нагрузка от одновременной работы двух антивирусных движков.В целом, как средство антивирусной защиты G Data Internet Security 2015 будет хорошо выполнять свои функции. Серьезные вирусы он пропускать не должен (хотя пропускают все, это уже как повезет). Если не копаться в настройках, не лазить каждый день по интерфейсу программы, то ей вполне успешно можно пользоваться на мощном компьютере.
