Ekiga 4.0.1 [STABLE] available

Submitted by Yannick Defais on Thu, 02/21/2013 — 01:01

Hello everyone,

This is the first update of the 4.0.0 stable release. It deals exclusively with bug fixing.

The most important change is fixing ALL known crashes and freezes, especially the long-standing freeze on quit on Windows. Add to this making H.323 with gatekeeper functional again, two registration fixes, and numerous other fixes here and there. There is also a security fix.

We encourage everyone to upgrade to this latest greatest version of ekiga.

The next release will be 4.0.2 or 4.2.0, targetted mainly at replacing obsolete technologies and fixing remaining registration and communication issues. After 4.2.0, we will switch to using v12 of ptlib/opal underlying libraries and will be able to provide the much-awaited communication encryption and IPv6 support.

How do I create an Ekiga online status button for my web page?

You can easily put a button on your web page showing your status: online or offline. If you’re online, the visitor can place a call using the button.

Here is what will appear on your web page:

In order to use it, simply add this to your web page:

<script src=”http://www.ekiga.net/status/presence.php?user=YOUR_ID_ON_EKIGA.NET”></script>

where YOUR_ID_ON_EKIGA.NET is simply your username.

Sound

This section is about testing and changing the sound configuration in Ekiga.

Test your computer

The audio test in the configuration druid will show you if there is any audio problem.

In case of audio problem, to check if your computer meets the requirements for Ekiga, try this command in a terminal:

$ arecord -D plughw:0,0 -c 1 -r 8000 -f S16_LE - | aplay -D plughw:0,0 -c 1 -r 8000 -f S16_LE -

Now, speak into your microphone. You should be able to hear yourself in your headset with a small delay (approximately half a second). If it doesn’t work as expected, first try to setup correctly your audio desktop configuration: make sure your microphone is not muted and the volume levels are OK.

Ekiga and other audio applications

Ekiga is capable of running simultaneously with other sound applications (like music and video players). The following directions should be enough to accomplish this:

From the Edit menu, choose Preferences → Devices → Audio Devices.

  • Select «ALSA» as the audio plugin

  • Select «Default» as output

  • Select «Default» as input

Then, from the Edit menu, choose Preferences → General → Sound Events. Select «Default» as alternate device output.

Tox Foundation

Several Ekigas on a LAN

There are several programs which allow copies of Ekiga to communicate with each other; you can use a SIP proxy (like Siproxd) or a PBX (like Asterisk. Further information about Ekiga and Asterisk can be found on the Ekiga documentation), or you can use Avahi.

Bonjour

Avahi is the main implementation of ZeroConf protocol under Ubuntu (known as Rendezvous or Bonjour on Mac OS X). This technology allows automatic discovery of services.

To set up Avahi, please follow the Zeroconf Howto.

Other copies of Ekiga on the LAN should appear in the Address Book (third button on the left) if you double-click on Contacts Near Me.

Panasonic TDE-200

1.Slot

IPCMPR Virtual Slot

Port Property.

Channel Attribute.

Provider Name, Name, Subscriber number —

После внесения настроек применяем кнопкой Apply(состояние оставляем OUS, включенный транк не позволяет изменять конфигурацию), переходим на следующую вкладку Account.

Register.

(Enabled)

Apply.

В столбце Connection(неважно какой вкладки) меняем значение OUS на INS.

Ekiga 5.0 — The Next Big Thing

Submitted by dsandras on Sun, 03/08/2015 — 17:57

Ekiga 5.0 — Why?

Ekiga was first released back in 2001 under the GnomeMeeting name, as a graduation thesis. In 2001, voice over IP, IP Telephony, and videoconferencing were not widespread technologies as they are now. The GNU/Linux desktop was at its infancy, and let’s not speak about multimedia capabilities. Most webcam drivers were buggy, ALSA had not been released yet and full-duplex audio was something difficult to achieve. General performance could also be an issue, especially when most efficient codecs were closed source. Generally speaking, the technology was not ready yet but Ekiga was already kicking!

Nowadays, everyone knows about voice over IP and videoconferencing. However, proprietary programs using closed communication protocols are dominating the market. Few people know that alternatives exist, and even less people know that using standard tools allows doing voice over IP, videoconferencing but also IP Telephony. The purpose of Ekiga has always been to be a mix between a simple chat application and a professional IP Telephony tool for the GNU/Linux destop. As a SIP softphone, it can completely replace hardware SIP IP phones and many people are using it as such.

With the upcoming 5.0 release, we were very ambitious. Most of the code has been reorganized, some parts have been completely rewritten. Things are getting simplified to attract new contributors (I am now 15 years older than when I started coding on Ekiga). The user interface is completely new and is now using cutting-edge technologies like GTK+3 or even Clutter to display video. New codecs have been added, and new features are still being added regularly (I would like to complete TLS and SRTP support before the release as well as MSRP chat).

Ekiga.net 2.0 — Why?

As we do not have any ICE implementation yet, and as NAT is still a problem, we would like to implement Far End NAT Traversal on the new platform.

All of this should come with a brand new modern look for all websites related to Ekiga and Ekiga.net.

Why is it important that you help?

On the contrary of many projects, Ekiga has always been developed during my spare time with a few contributors working in their spare time too. Spare time is what it is: spare time… Sometimes you have much spare time, sometimes you don’t have any spare time for a few weeks. That means that progress on the project is slow, especially when you want to be ambitious.

Our team is relatively small and there are many areas where we are not competent: website design is one of them.

Webcam

Ekiga does not require a webcam.

How to set up a webcam

Choosing the right webcam driver

The Linux kernel has two ways to communicate with video devices, the old v4l and the new v4l2. It’s best to use v4l2, but some devices only support v4l.

From the Edit menu, choose Preferences → Devices → Video device.

Try «v4l2” or «v4l” as video plugin

Choosing the right video device

If you have several video devices (like a TV card and a webcam) you will need to tell Ekiga which one to use:

From the Edit menu, choose Preferences → Devices → Video device. Change the channel number until you find the right one.

Test your webcam

To test your webcam, click the fourth of the six icons (a grey round webcam) on the left side of the main Ekiga window. If eveything is ok, you’ll see the output of the webcam. If not, you’ll see the Ekiga logo bouncing slowly.

Introduction

The information in these notes will tell how to connect an Ekiga softphone to a local Asterisk PBX and how to get the most out of it.

I will assume that you already have an Asterisk up and running so I will not say much about the setup of Asterisk. There is plenty of Asterisk information available on the Internet. In addition to the main Asterisk website you may consult the Asterisk page on Voip-Info or AsteriskGuru. The latter has a good tutorial on Asterisk installation and configuration. The best information on Asterisk is found in this book: Asterisk: The Future of Telephony, Jared Smith et al, O’Reilly 2005, ISBN 0-596-00962-3. It is also available online.

The setup I will use in these notes is this: Asterisk is installed on the gateway/router to the Internet and Ekiga is installed on an ‘inside’ workstation.

This setup has the advantage that it does away with NAT problems since Asterisk is on a host that has an official IP address.

Configuring Asterisk

Assuming that your Asterisk is in place and functioning, the first step is to make Ekiga a client of your Asterisk. You do this by having the following lines in sip.conf – one of Asterisk’s many configuration files:

The videosupport=yes is required in order to make Asterisk handle the video stream to and from Ekiga.

101 and welcome are the name and password we will use later when we configure Ekiga.

nat=no means that there is no firewall between Asterisk and Ekiga.

canreinvite=no is very important. Without it the two parties in a conversation will try to talk directly to each other by issuing re-invite requests. This will fail if a firewall is incolved.

context=home defines which section (‘context’) in the dialplan will handle calls from 101 (you!).

We define the home context in extensions.conf:

The first exten makes it possible for you to call yourself. Since Ekiga is not a multi-line phone you cannot use this feature with Ekiga but other phones e.g. X-lite has this facility. Instead you can call 600 and be taken through the same echo test as you hear on sip:500@ekiga.net.

That’s all there is to it on the Asterisk side.

How do I call other SIP providers (peering)?

Peering is the term given to agreement between VoIP Service Providers which enables the users of one service to call users of another.

This is usually implemented by dialing a special prefix number and then the number of the receipitant (on the ‘other’ service).

With Ekiga.net, you can use SipBroker prefixes.

Here are some examples of prefixes:

Prefix

Registrar

Description

*282

sip.broadvoice.com

Broadvoice, do not work actually (2007 july)

*747

proxy01.sipphone.com

Gizmo/SIPPhone

Freeworlddialup

*534

sip1.voipbuster.com

Voipbuster

*551

sip.internetcalls.com

You can also use the special prefix *013 to place a call using Enum. As prefixes do not have a standard, Enum tries to solve this situation.

Twinkle

Ekiga.Net»
