Darktable vs rawtherapee
New Features And Changes
- Show a dialog window that tells when locking the database/library failed
- Don’t shade the whole region on the map when searching for a location. Instead just draw a border around it.
- Also in map mode: Clear the search list and map indicators when resetting the search module.
- With OsmGPSMap newer than version 1.1.0 (i.e., anything released after that OsmGPSMap version) the map will show copyright info.
- Running jobs with a progressbar (mostly import and export) will show that progress bar ontop the window entry in your task bar – if the system supports it. It should work on GNOME, KDE and Windows at least.
- Add bash like string replacement for variables (export, watermark, session settings)
- Add a preferences option to ask before removing empty dirs
- The “colorbalance” module got a lot faster, thanks to SSE optimized code
- Make gradient sliders a little more colorful
- Make PNG compression level used for exporting configurable
- On OSX, load single images from command line or via drag&drop in darkroom mode
- Add an option to omit the intermediate tag hierarchy in exported files and only add the last level
- In the watermark module, sort the list of SVG files and omit the file extension
- Support XYZ as a proofing profile
- Local contrast now got a new slider to set the midtone range
- darktable got two new helper scripts (those are not installed by default, grab them from the sources)
- One to purge thumbnails that no longer have an associated image in the database,
- and a second script that uses inotify to watch a folder for new files to open them in a running darktable instance.
- In the curve editors of base curve and tone curve you can now delete nodes with a right click and see coordinates of nodes while editing. Note that you can use keyboard modifiers and to change the precision of your changes
- Creating a new instance of a module can now be done with a quick click of the middle mouse button on the multi-instance icon
- New darktable installations on computers with more than 8 Gb of memory will now by default use half of that per module
- Several background colors and the brush color are now configurable in the CSS
- Some new cameras can bump the ISO level to insane highs. We try to follow as good as we can by no longer limiting it to 51200 in the GUI
- Base curve and the highlights module now support multiple instances and use blending and masks
- Having the key toggle between 1 and 0 stars wasn’t very popular with many people. You can disable that extra feature and have it behave like the other rating shortcuts now
- You can decide if you want to be asked before resetting the history stacks of images from the lighttable
- The grain module was slightly changed to have a more pleasing, photographic-paper like appearance
- Using the color look up table module you can now convert your images to monochrome, honoring the Helmholtz-Kohlrausch effect
- Support basic import of Lightroom 7 settings
- Change the styling of insensitive bauhaus widgets
- Don’t hide the mode combobox in the exposure module, just disable it
- Read primaries and whitepoint from .hdr files and default to those as the input color profile
- Some more small improvements were made
Introducing Darktable — Everything You Need to Know
Darktable is a free, open source alternative image editing program, but leaving it that doesn’t do the program justice. It features the same mass editing of RAW images as Lightroom and all the organizing and control features of the program as well.
One control differentiating this program is automation. You can take all those repetitive tasks that slow you down in Lightroom and set them to happen automatically, freeing you up for more in-depth, more specific edits.
Bottom line: It’s a RAW image editor, organizer, and automation tool.

Why Use Darktable
The most important feature of this alternative program is automation. Even though it’s open source software — and many of the latest camera compatibilities may be slower to arrive — it offers plenty of control features, including masking in local adjustments.
It has a lot of tools and punches above its weight class, so to speak, but the tools do require a learning curve. However, youtube videos help and simply working with like features.
Basic features include:
- exposure and saturation
- Expouse (a shift in exposure)
- white balance
- contrast
- highlight/shadow balance
- color correction
Darktable Photo Editing Software
It also offers nondestructive photo editing like some alternatives, preserving the original image if you need it. Working with this program may have a learning curve, but the robust set of features for editing is a pleasant surprise considering this is a free tool.
You’ll need a few rounds to get the hang of the controls, but the editing suite offers more than the average for a free tool. The interface is like other paid batch editors.
Darktable Additional Functions
Darktable doesn’t have presets, but you can upload or create your own batch to help make image editing easier. You do get graduated density features and grain controls while the grain feature allows you to create vintage film looks for certain RAW photos.
Who Should Use Darktable?
If you don’t have space in your budget for a monthly membership, Darktable control offers RAW processing for free without sacrificing too much of what you love about the paid programs. It provides a robust alternative with a few quick edits and the ability to control and customize features you use over and over.

Darktable vs Lightroom – How’s The Interface?
The first place where differences pop up is in the interface. Overall, the interface is going to have a slight intuitive edge.
Lightroom Classic CC 2019
Lightroom’s interface features seven tabs that help organize the work you do. These modules, including Library and Develop, keep the workflow moving. It’s easy to navigate and won’t take much time to find your way around, even if this is your first time.
The dark framework is visually appealing and helps highlight tone in your photographs. Overall, it’s a clean, minimalist design that gently leads you where you need to go and avoids the bloat of other well-known RAW photo editing tools.
Darktable 2.4.4
Darktable’s interface is remarkably similar to Lightroom… until it isn’t. Although the general feeling and tone of both interfaces feel the same, once you get into the details of Darktable, it begins to get a little confusing.
It’s workable, don’t worry. But it’s going to take you a bit longer to get used to it with the menus and layouts here versus with Lightroom’s intuitive UI.
Winner: Lightroom — at least at first
Adobe Lightroom: Strengths and Weaknesses
Well-organized interface. There are seven tabs on the Lr interface. They help organize your working process in the most convenient way. Thanks to these modules, including Library and Develop, your workflow is moving.
Even if you use Lightroom for the first time, it will be easy to navigate it and figure everything out. The software features an appealing dark framework that helps highlight tone in the image.
Qualitative color correction. If you think that your shot requires a fantastic color correction, then Lightroom is the best program to solve this issue. You will be able to adjust exposure, contrast, sharpness, improve white balance, edit light/shades, etc. Moreover, there are a lot of free Lightroom tutorials on how edit photos in Lightroom.
Integration with Photoshop. If you make photo retouching in Photoshop, then using Lightroom is the right decision. These programs are developed by one company so they are connected with each other and interact well. You won’t face any problems if you need to import a picture to Photoshop while working in Lightroom, perform image retouching and send it back to Lightroom.
Cataloging of photos. If you work in Lightroom, you may import images using a catalog with advanced metadata settings, adding keywords, changing the destination, and even applying presets when importing. The pics are organized into collections and you may navigate through folders on the desktop.
Mobile version available. In this respect, in the Darktable vs Lightroom battle, Lr is confidently pulling ahead. Developers provide a Lightroom Mobile app completely free of charge. It features useful functions and may boast of great HDR and curves capabilities. It works smoothly with RAW files, Lightroom mobile presets. However, it does not support batch photo processing.
High price. It costs $20.99 a month. There is a free trial version available ‒ you may use the software for 7 days. However, if you need it for longer, you have to get a paid licensed version. So, remember to check out current Lightroom discounts.
No deep photo retouching. In general, Lightroom is a great program offering all the necessary tools. But, at the same time, you can’t make complex adjustments with it. Only simple photo editing is possible with this software.
However, you may always export the necessary image to Photoshop and retouch it there. Then, when you are ready with the photo, you may again display it in Lightroom.
Okay, let’s start migrating
So whats the game plan? Well, easy – get the information stored in the Lightroom catalog and transfer it to Darktable. Unfortunately, Darktable is not able to directly read Lightroom’s catalog file, but Lightroom is able to additional create sidecar files, and these can be read by Darktable.
Lightroom settings
Make sure the setting “Automatically write changes into XMP” is enabled. This creates xmp sidecar files when metadata is saved in Lightroom.
Open Lightroom settings via:
“Edit” ️ “Catalog Settings”
Image 1: My Adobe Lightroom catalog settings.
Make sure the color labels are have their default values.
“Metadata” ️ “Color Label Set” ️ “Edit”… (or simply choose “Lightroom default” if available)
Image 2: Metadata default settings in Adobe Lightroom 5.7.1
Darktable settings
The following setting will allow Darktable to check for metadata/sidecar file changes during each startup – instead of just once during the image import process.
Open the Darktable global preferences by clicking on the gear symbol in the “lighttable” view.

Image 3: Darktable settings gear in lighttable view
Go to the “Core Options” register and enable the option “look for updated xmp files on startup.”
Metadata transfer overview
Which metadata one wants to transfer, is heavily workflow related. There are also settings one should not (want to) transfer between Lightroom and Darktable (see ️ marks in transfer table). As Darktable and Lightroom differ in the used “RAW processing engine”, settings such as, exposure values would lead to different results in the two applications.
The following table show the results of different types of metadata written in Lightroom, followed by an Darktable import.

The migration from Lightroom to Darktable step-by-step
Preconditions:
- Darktable is not running.
- Make sure no Darktable xmp files exist (i.e. files named <Filename>.<extension>.xmp) for the images you want to import.
- The Darktable library file has no record of the images you want to import. This can be done either by right clicking a folder and choosing remove in the “collect images” section in the “lighttable” view while it is sorted by folder. Or one deletes the complete Darktable library file (default location ~/.config/darktable/darktable.lib). In case the image used to be in the library make sure to double-check step 1 and 2.
Step-by-step:
- Identify the metadata attributes you want to transfer, and make sure every image you want to transfer has these metadata attributes set in Lightroom.
- Now save the metadata into the xmp sidecar files:In Lightrooms “Library” view, select all images you want to transfer to Darktable and press “CTRL + S” (or use “Metadata” ️ “Save metadata to image” in the menu bar.). This step will create/update xmp sidecar files.
- When everything is done – close Lightroom
- *optional stepIn case you want to use a different root album folder for Darktable, now is the time to copy the folder to its new location.
- Open Darktable and choose “folder” from the import section in the “lighttable” view (see image 4, red marked area).
- Select desired the folder and press the “open” button. In case the folder contains sub-folder with images, make sure to check the option “import directories recursively” under “import options”.
- Verify the imported images result. All images known to Darktable can be found in the “collect images” section in the “lighttable” view (see image 4, blue marked area). In order to feel a bit more familiar with the structure, select “folders” from the drop-down menu in the section (see image 4, green marked).

Now, tell me how to contribute patches …
For bug fixes and “minor” enhancements (minor mostly in terms of code and complexity) you should always work on our master branch. This is the main developing branch for darktable and the one to become the next major release version. If your patch is also valuable for the currently maintained stable branch (so darktable-2.4.x) it will be cherry-picked to that branch by one of the developers (make sure to remind us if we forget to do so). This applies mostly to bug fixes and small usability enhancements (like a changed sorting order of list items, for example).
To work in the master branch you have switch to this branch with
$ git checkout master
If you want to contribute fixes which are specific to another branch (let’s say you’re working on geolocation) checkout that specific branch first. You can print a list of all available branches with
$ git branch -a # List all branches $ git branch -r # List remote branches only $ git checkout geo
If you want to play with the code, or occasionally want to supply small patches, you should create a local branch from the one you want to work on (here: master)
$ git checkout master $ git checkout -b mybranch
Your personal local branch can be updated using
$ git pull $ git checkout mybranch $ git rebase master
$ git checkout mybranch $ git format-patch origin/master
Lightroom Vs. Capture One
Capture One is a program by camera company Phase One. They do things differently, but very professional. If there was one program to use as a direct Lightroom alternative, then Capture One would be it.
It isn’t cheap, but then, neither was Lightroom before the subscription concept. It is an impressive tool and offers a huge feature set, meaning there isn’t much at all that you cant do here.
One huge benefit to Capture One is the ability to import Lightroom catalogs. This is great if you feel some of your selected catalogs need a different idea of tweaking. Also, if you get sick of Lightroom, your time and energy setting up the catalogs are not wasted.
Lightroom is simple and easy to use. Capture One presents your editing tools in a visually appealing manner, which are extensive as they are impressive.
This is a pro editing software tool, not for the faint-hearted. Most users won’t use the full capacity of option available and might find it overkill.
I myself found it a little difficult to navigate as I am very used to Adobe programs, but I easily forget I had the same issue in the beginning with Lightroom. Swapping editing programs will come with a learning curve, as is to be expected.
It is available for Windows and Mac, with a free trial available (before you splash out big time) here.
Overall : ★★★☆☆
Difficult to navigate but beautiful to use. Also, the yearly price was substantial compared to Lightroom. We have a more detailed article on Capture One vs Lightroom to check out too!

Introducing Adobe Lightroom – Everything To Know
Adobe Lightroom is more than just a photo editor. It’s a family of tools designed to use across a variety of platforms — Windows, iOS, macOS, among others — to save, organize, share, and manipulate your entire photo collection.
It blends the basics of a image editor with a quality image management tool, making it perfect for modern photographers. Those thousands of pics you snap with your phone and camera? It helps you get them all sorted for easy viewing, and more importantly, accessibility.
The short story: Lightroom is a RAW converter designed to bring image control and management out of the dark ages.
Why Use Lightroom
Lightroom boasts a suite of features designed to make photo-processing frustration-free. It allows you to:
- Convert and manage RAW images
- Organize and label them
- Geotag from a virtual map
- Process and create photobooks
- Apply controls to multiple images
- Work in nondestructive controls (images will always revert to the original)

Editing in the Lightroom Interface
Editing in Lightroom is like Photoshop, but the execution is very different. It prioritizes controlling with large batches of photos — think hundreds or thousands of them — all at once.
For example, a wedding photographer can import an image from a particular wedding and immediately apply a prescribed batch of settings to them all at once. From there, labeling, tagging, and organizing is a snap.
- Some basic features include:
- exposure adjustment
- white balance control
- contrast
- shadow/highlight balance
- adjustment brush
- clarity
- precise tone curve
Lightroom Additional Functions
Newer versions of the program allow editors to create photo books right in the program, cutting down on exports and keeping everything for a project right in the same program — a win for a simplified workflow.
It also comes with free presets. If you’re a beginner, presets like these help jumpstart your editing. If you’re experienced with editing already, they either automate the process or offer better control and inspiration.
You also get:
- crop overlay (nondestructive)
- lens correction (including light distortions)
- spot removal (pinpoint edits)
- graduated filters
Who should use Lightroom?
Photographers that work with straightforward controls across large batches of photos should migrate over to Lightroom from a place like Photoshop. It’s also critical for editors who want to work with nondestructive edits, keeping the original accessible for later use if necessary.
What Is Lightroom?
Lightroom is a professional photo editor used to work with digital photos. It is applied to correct colors, develop digital negatives (DNG, RAW), organize a catalog, convert in a JPEG format, etc.
You will have the possibility to create as many folders as you wish and sync them with other devices. You will easily do this thanks to the exquisite and intuitive interface. Moreover, you may edit any photo using the available Adobe tools. The best thing is that you can use a wide choice of gestures for the fast and easy performance of the most frequently performed actions.

Стили в Darktable

The Big Ones
-
A full rework of the GUI Gtk/CSS. The whole GUI is now fully
controlled by CSS rules. There is no more size, color, position in
Gtk C code. This makes the whole GUI themable. This version comes
with different theme:-
darktable : the default theme
-
darktable-elegant-darker : more condensed fonts
best experience if Roboto font installed -
darktable-icons-darker : as elegant, with IOP icons
best experience if Roboto font installed -
darktable-elegant-dark : lighter version
-
darktable-elegant-grey : even lighter version
-
darktable-icons-dark : lighter version
- darktable-icons-grey : even lighter version
-
Note that this requires Gtk 3.22 or higher to work properly.
-
The color picker on the blend, tone curve, color zones and fill
light modules now allows to select an area by Ctrl+click on it. -
Add undo/redo support in lighttable for tags, color labels, rating,
metadata, deleted history stack, pasted history stack and applied style.
IMPORTANT:
As Ctrl-z is commonly used for undo/redo this is what is used
on the lighttable. This conflicts with the previous Ctrl-z which
was assigned to preview with focus point. The preview (previously z)
and preview with focus detection (previously Ctrl-z) are now assigned
respectively to w and Ctrl-w.
-
A new timeline view has been introduced in the lighttable.
-
A new lighttable mode ‘culling’ is added. It displays a fixed number
of consecutive images, starting from the first selected image and
allows to pan & zoom them. It can be navigated with the mouse wheel
and keyboard and the number of displayed images can be set with an
entry at the bottom. -
A quite extensive rewrite of the lighttable has been made to improve
drastically the overall performance. This also includes the
filmstrip which has also received a big rewrite for the same reasons. The
lighttable is now usable on 4K and 5K monitors. -
Add new raster mask supports. This is a copy of a parametric mask
which is stable during the whole pixel-pipe. -
Modules can now be re-ordered with Ctrl+Shift+drag.
IMPORTANT PLEASE READ:
Note that this is NOT a GUI re-ordering but a pixel-pipe
reordering. If you’re not familiar with pixel pipe order and the
actual quality that could result from changing the default, do not
change the order.
The default order has been set to give the best result in the
majority of time and will never be on the wrong side.
-
The color zones module now display an histogram based on the ‘select
by’ channel and displays the selected range if the color picker is
in area mode.
It acts now like the tone curve (but horizontal),
it has two edit modes: edit by area is the former one, if not checked nodes
can be edited like in the tone curve, delete only works by right-click
when not in edit area mode.
A new process mode has been added: smooth is the former one, strong is new.
An interpolation method has been added that allows to select different types
of curves.
The color picker allows to select by area with Ctrl+click.
A new color picker has been added that creates a curve based on the area
selected from the image.
When pressing the shortcut ‘pan&zoom while editing masks’ the draw area
can now be zoomed. Double-click on the bottom bar resets the zoom. -
New module Filmic RBG. This module is designed to replace the base
curve, shadows and highlights. The new filmic rgb module replaces
the old one introduced in 2.6.2 and should be easier to use and will
reduce color casts. The old filmic module is now deprecated and
cannot be used on new developments. -
New module tone equalizer which brings an easy and safe way to
adjust the tones in different areas of the image. The module comes
with 9 controls ranging from blacks area to specular ones. It
possible to adjust each area with slides, curve or directly over the
image with a controllable picker.
Lightroom Vs. DxO Photo Lab
Photo Lab by DxO is the third professional software editing program, behind Lightroom and Capture One. It works well as a Lightroom alternative, but it also works well with it, Adobe Bridge or the Apple’s Photos editing application.
What we like is that the editing features are all in one place. This saves time trying to find specific editing tools dotted all over the place. They are easy to use and very responsive, but the best area comes from noise reduction, which is highly rated.
This program comes with the Nik Collection Plugins. This gives you seven amazing preset looks to your images.
The biggest negative here is that you can’t make local adjustments to your images. You need to use another editor for that, which defeats the object of an alternative if you need Lightroom to operate.
Saying that, it does have a few intuitive areas that are similar to Lightroom. The Automatic Repair tool copies the Spot Removal tool. The Control Points, Brush and Graduated Features are also similar, if not the same in Lightroom.
You can find DxO Photo Lab here, giving you a trial before you buy option for Windows and OSX.
Overall : ★★★☆☆
DxO falls short in its ability for local adjustments, yet it is intuitive in the actions it does have.
