Using Clam Sentinel for Windows for real time protection:
After installation Clam Sentinel, it will actively provide real time protection to your PC. It also gives you options to customize the scope of this real time protection. Clam Sentinel is a simple system tray application and all the settings and options can be accessed by the menu as seen below. Settings, starting or stopping monitors of files, quarantine options, logs, memory scan, and more can be accessed from this menu.
In the settings menu as seen below, you will have ability to enable or disable various features of this free utility.
Clam Sentinel gives you the option to choose the disks to be scanned, places not to be scanned, decide the number of simultaneously active scans, set the file size for logs, and more in the advanced setting menu.
It even has the ability to detect new drives (such as USB) and monitor them for malware. Every time you insert a removable disk, it will give you a popup as seen below.
If you like to keep the resources used by antivirus software on your computer to a minimum then Clam Sentinel is great solution.
How to install Clam Sentinel for Windows:
Clam Sentinel stays in the system tray and detects malware threats using ClamWin Antivirus which results in real time protection of your system. To get this free real time protection, first you will need ClamWin Antivirus which you can get from the link available at the end of this review. After downloading this free antivirus, install it just like any other program.
After a successful install of ClamWin Antivirus, install Clam Sentinel for Windows. You can get the download link for Clam Sentinel at the end of this post. While installing, make sure to enable automatic starting of Clam Sentinel, this improves security and I would recommend it.
After installation, the software will ask you to define which drives are fixed, as shown below. After selection, these drives will be constantly monitored for malware activities.
Once installed you will have the system tray icon of the software as seen below.
Installing Clam Sentinel
Clam Sentinel is a system tray application that detects file system changes and scans the files modified using ClamWin. It also detects new drives added (like usb pen) and monitors these units until the program is closed or until the device is disconnected. Clam Sentinel can be downloaded from here. The current version at this posting is 1.22.
The Clam Sentinel project, which adds a real-time capability to ClamWin when files are added/modified/copied, but it does not offer true on-access protection. Clam Sentinel is free, open source like ClamWin. Their site is http://clamsentinel.sourceforge.net

Now that we have downloaded the Clam Sentinel installation we can start the installation. Double-click to start the installation.
Click OK to accept the language.
Click Next.
Accept the license agreement and click next.
Click the Start Clam Sentinel automatically for all users and click next.
Click next to accept the installation destination.
Click next to accept the start menu folder location.
If you want the icons select the boxes and click next.
Click install to start the installation of Clam Sentinel.
Click Finish and Clam Sentinel will start.
First thing Clam Sentinel will do is ask for the drives you want to have it monitor. Click Confirm and Clam Sentinel will appear as a shield icon in the corner. One thing you want to do is to exclude what you don’t want Clam Sentinel to look at. We do this by creating a whitelist.
Creating Exclusions (Whitelist)
Any program or file you do not want blocked will need to be added to the whitelist. As Clam Sentinel will quarantine it. To get to the dialog to make these exceptions right-click on Clam Sentinel in the status bar and move to Advanced Settings > Paths or Files not Scanned.
Clam Sentinel will present an interface to add and remove files, directories and extensions.
To add an exclusion, just type in the space provided and click add. Some examples of exclusions are listed below.
- Exclude one file everywhere – clamscan.exe
- Exclude One file in one folder – C:\Program Files (x86)\ClamWin\bin\clamscan.exe
- Exclude an entire folder – C:\Program Files (x86)\ClamWin\bin\*
It is best to use the full folder description for a file–otherwise, there could be a malware that calls itself by the filename (say clamscan.exe), so the full folder description will stop that.
Clam Sentinel also allows you to add and remove extensions to be scanned. Right-click on Clam Sentinel in the status bar and move to Advanced Settings > Extensions Scanned. Add and remove what you would like. No need for the wild card * to be in the entries, just .PS1 for example will do.
There are many other settings available under Advanced Settings menu.

После окончания процесса установки все основные команды приложения встраиваются в контекстное меню Проводника и инсталлирует дополнительный модуль (плагин) для почтового клиента Outlook. Вызов сканера по требованию можно производить именно из таких выпадающих меню, либо же, при запуске программы в ручном режиме. Кроме того, можно использовать и дополнительный Планировщик, который задает расписание для сканирования, что, в конечном итоге избавляет пользователя от постоянного вызова программы. При условии того, что приложение не имеет собственного антивирусного монитора, в почтовом клиенте оно без всяких проблем определяет потенциально опасные вложения, которые могут содержаться в письмах электронной почты, и удаляет их. Заметьте, удаляет, а не лечит, как это делают многие известные на сегодняшний день программы. Плюс ко всему, что действительно не может не радовать, антивирусные базы обновляются в автоматическом режиме и принципиально участия пользователя в этом процессе не требуют.
Само приложение имеет простой интуитивно понятный графический интерфейс, с которым сможет разобраться пользователь любого уровня подготовки, тем более, что все основные команды находятся прямо перед глазами. По большому счету, даже в настройки заходить не имеет смысла, поскольку все это до определенной степени автоматизировано. Конечно, если вы опытный пользователь, который уже имел дело с такими приложениями, можете изменять их по своему усмотрению.
В итоге, стоит сказать, что в качестве штатного антивируса такую программу применять не имеет смысла. Особенно это касается тех случаев, когда с компьютерного терминала происходит доступ в сеть Интернет. Это приложение ни в коей мере не способно защитить вас от находящихся там угроз. Думается, более всего, это программное обеспечение рассчитано именно на работу в уже зараженных операционных системах. А вот тут приложение и проявляет все свои плюсы и достоинства.
Description
ClamWin is a free, open source antivirus for all Microsoft Windows operating system versions. It is one of the easiest to setup and manage antivirus products. It is also the only «free» antivirus available for Windows users. It is based on ClamAV engine and features a high detection rate for viruses and spyware, a scanning scheduler, menu integration to Microsoft Windowss Explorer etc. If you’re looking for a portable version you can check the ClamWin Portable packaged as a portable app from here.
Important: Currently, ClamWin Free Antivirus does not provide an on-access real-time scanner, which means that you need to scan manually a file in order to test it for malware. However, you can scan one or more folders/OS partitions or add them as scheduled scans.

The Trope
In The Sentinel canon, the Sentinel (Jim Ellison) has super-heightened senses, which can be useful tools for his job as a cop. Anthropology student Blair Sandburg helps him deal with the effects of those senses during the series. Ellison’s super-heightened senses very often lead to his «zoning out» or becoming overfocused on one of the senses and in fanon (almost) the only thing that will help them return from a zone-out is assistance from a/their Guide.
Most Sentinel AU fic are based on Sentinel fanon and the popular Sentinels and Guides are Known trope in Sentinel fandom. Thus, in Sentinel AU fic, the terms Sentinel and Guide aren’t just descriptions, they’re an almost mystical calling, with the Sentinel and the Guide destined to find each other and be together. This may or may not include a soulbond, and the spirit animals present in The Sentinel canon may or may not be completely ignored. In some stories Sentinels and Guides are a societal institution managed by military or non-military bureaucracies, in others they are instead self-organized in pack structures. There is much variation and overlap in fanfic.
When Sentinels and Guides are a societal institution under the management of some kind of agency, either the Sentinel or the Guide is usually higher-class than the other, who may be little more than a slave. The GDP Series by Susan Foster helped popularize this specific sub-trope in Sentinels and Guides are Known fic, which expanded beyond Sentinel fandom into general Sentinel AUs.

I am sure you noticed the first phrase «the only open source and 100% free antivirus» which means that you will never need to buy a license and the source code is also publicly available, which is important because other security experts can inspect the source code, but that’s another discussion.
Getting ClamWin
Download the latest install from http://www.clamwin.com/.
Installing ClamWin
Installation as with most programs is to click and accept the defaults for installation. By default the program will install to c:\Program Files (x86)\ClamWin.
Start the installation and click next when ready
Accept the agreement and click Next.
Click Next
Accept the default path for installation and quick next.
Typical installation will do the trick, click next.
Click next to aceppt Start Menu Folder location.
Click the create desktop icon if you like, by default it is unchecked.
Click Install to start the installation.
Installation will progress along.
Once the installation has completed ClamWin will update it’s virus database.
Click Finish to complete the installation.

A quick overview
The ClamWin installer lets users integrate the program with the Explorer browser and install the additional Outlook module, which is highly recommended for Outlook users. By right-clicking the system tray icon you can access and configure the options panel and update ClamWin in addition to as scheduling scans, view reports and check for updates manually.
ClamWin’s interface is extremely simplistic (something that I appreciate), but it is also very efficient. It is a light program that places a relatively small burden on your CPU (in my test, my CPU which is an i7 didn’t seem to struggle at all). If you search for ClamWin CPU usage on older machines, the feedback is positive.
On opening, users are presented with a simplistic tree view which displays all the directories they may want to scan.
Choose the «C», «D» or any other system partition, for example, and ClamWin will perform a thorough scan. If present, the program will alert you to whatever potential issues that may require your attention. Some of what comes up won’t necessarily be problems but they are usually worth checking anyway. If unsure, you can upload that file on VirusTotal or any other similar service just to make sure you are safe.
Here is a statement that has nothing to do with this product: ClamWin can’t catch everything but the truths is no other commercial antivirus product can guarantee you that it will catch «everything». They all deliver a certain detection rate. From what I read, this free antivirus is not the best but neither the worst. It had some negative feedback a couple of years ago but the recent reviews rated him as a good, decent antivirus product.
To test this, I intentionally downloaded a few files from torrent sites that were flagged by users as malware (and verified them on VirusTotal) and ClamWin recognized them as a Trojan horse. The obvious action was to remove the infected files. You may set ClamWin to deliver a report of suspicious items for manual cleaning and quarantine or delete suspicious files in the order they’re found. The program can be set to open when you open Outlook in order to catch any nasty bugs as they enter your machine. It will not affect the way Outlook functions, but it may slow it down somewhat on smaller devices.

Conclusion
As a free option, ClamWin is outstanding. If you’re working on a shoestring budget, it may well be the one for you. Good protection is not expensive, however- so if your habits or your workflow put you in harm’s way frequently, ClamWin may not be the wisest option. OK, what I am trying to say; if you work with sensitive data you might want to check other alternatives that offer you some extra protection features (to be continued…below).
What’s more, if you don’t already know- Windows is the most vulnerable operating system on the market. So if you insist on using it, it’s probably unwise not to buy a little extra protection. To give an example, a firewall can help, one or more anti-malware products that does not interact with popular antiviruses is great, an anti-keylogger is even better and so on.
Free security utilities like ClamWin will provide you with only a basic level of protection. But don’t forget you will also be getting a reasonable alternative to subscription-based tools at premium prices, many of which depend on automated conveniences and frivolous extras that don’t necessarily buy you any extra protection in order to justify the price (again, that’s another subject and not the purpose of this review).
As with any reasonable anti-virus tool, it is highly recommended that you review your options thoroughly and research at least a handful of comparable anti-virus tools before committing ClamWin to protect your primary computer.
For backup PCs, machines you don’t use that often, and for those with tight budgets, ClamWin can be an excellent alternative. We would recommend it without hesitation for those types of uses because any halfway anti-virus is preferable to no protection at all. True, it offers basic, but reliable protection without the added frills of a premium anti-virus package. Just don’t forget that this project will appreciate any donation and will help the team working on it to release future, improved versions.

Summary:
Clam Sentinel is a great way of extending the functionality of ClamWin Antivirus, it is great for older hardware as it supports Windows 98 and above. But keep in mind that this is not a great security solution for the computer as it does not detect malicious links, can’t scan downloads until they’re complete also there is no behavior monitoring feature which in total makes this antivirus solution weak when compared to others. However if you are running old hardware or you don’t like antivirus solutions draining for system resources then Clam Sentinel is a nice option.

ClamWin Review
In the last 15 years, I tried and I paid for several antivirus licenses and I also learned one valuable thing. The best protection against viruses, trojans, worms, backdoors, adware, spyware is always your level of education when it comes down to security and your «common sense».
I learned this the hard way, many years ago when I lost all my data on a computer, using a fully license, paid antivirus product (up-to-date) which didn’t recognized a dangerous version of Virut virus. After I scanned my PC with other antivirus products, they recognized this virus but none of them was able to clean my hard drive so I ended up doing a full HDD overwritte and a new OS reinstall.
