  • Background Information

«Identity curses men from birth, as does fate. Konrad, forgive me for the burdens which I shoulder you with. I pray that you will wear them as a badge on your heart, not a stone around your neck.» — Delfador, at the coronation of Li’sar & Konrad

Had Parandra of Elvendom not been as prudent and as benevolent, the tale of the boy who became Konrad, King of Wesnoth would never have been sung in the minstrel’s tunes. Konrad never knew his real parents; he was found by Elves, as an infant, abandoned in a copse a few strides off an Elvish trader’s path. Parandra the wise, knowing the baby had been there for some time, (as evidenced by certain smells emanating from the child’s swaddling clothes) set aside all hope of reuniting him with his unknown parents. She picked up the orphaned child and took him as her own.

Delfador arrived sometime thereafter, bearing the grim evidence of his failed rescue; the lifeless body of the murdered infant-Prince Konrad. Parandra and Delfador discussed the situation at length, including the co-incidental discovery of the other, nameless child. Both of them shared their worries that this plan, this trick, wouldn’t work. However, staring down at the foundling in his new crib, touched by his liveliness and cheer, they agreed to give him and the people of Wesnoth, a chance.

That night, while the corpse of one child was laid to rest in the green woods, another child, the boy abandoned & left for dead, was given a new destiny as the fugitive Konrad, Prince & Heir to the throne of Wesnoth.

Delfador raised Konrad as his son, yet never pretended to be his father. Konrad grew up knowing only the life that Delfador created for him. Delfador trained him as a warrior and leader. Each new lesson gave way to another for the precocious student.

During his seventeenth year with Delfador, Konrad and his mentor fled the land of the elves during an attack led by Asheviere.

The Wesnoth Markup Language

The Wesnoth Markup Language (WML) is used to code almost everything in Wesnoth, including scenarios, units, savefiles, and the user interface layout. WML files are simple, human-readable text files, usually with the .cfg extension, with similarities to INI files and XML. A major feature in WML are macros, which are alike those found in the C language and similarily are handled by a preprocessor. Implementation-wise, WML files are handled mainly by the config class (and simple_wml in wesnothd).

This page is a collection of pointers to different common WML structures.

See BuildingScenarios, BuildingCampaigns and BuildingUnits
for a tutorial style overview.

Note: this reference may contain slight inaccuracies, might not list all existing keys and tags or might contain some deprecated syntax. If you find that this reference doesn’t give you the answer to how to implement some feature in WML, the most reliable way is to look at the WML code of existing units and campaigns that have done so.

Available AIs

This section briefly lists the different AIs available in Wesnoth. Click on the links provided here and in the resources section below for detailed descriptions of the AIs and for instructions for using and customizing them.

AIs Available to Scenario and Map Designers

Wesnoth comes with several built-in AIs from which scenario and map designers can choose:

  • Default (RCA) AI: If no special instructions are given, this AI is used automatically for all computer-controlled sides with no setup needed. It can be customized in many different ways.
  • The Experimental AI adds additional features to the RCA AI. (Version 1.15.3 and later only) Several of the actions of the Experimental AI have been merged into the default AI.
  • Micro AIs add specialized behavior to Wesnoth that cannot be achieved with the default AI. There is a large number of available Micro AIs and they can be set up using just a few lines of simple WML code.
  • Custom AIs: In addition to these AIs, Wesnoth provides a large variety of options for writing your own AI code.

AIs Available in the Multiplayer Setup Menu

Several AIs are available to be chosen for computer players in the multiplayer setup menu:

  • Default AI (RCA): This is the same AI as listed above.
  • Experimental_AI: Again, the same AI as described above.
  • Debug Mode Dev AIs: If Wesnoth is in debug mode, several additional AIs are available in the menu. For the most part, these are not meant as complete stand-alone AIs, or as AIs that are significantly different from the default AI, but rather as examples that can be used for development purposes. (Version 1.13.5 and later only) The list of AIs has been cleaned up. Only working and (somewhat) meaningful AIs remain.
  • Custom AIs: Just as it is possible to include custom AIs in the scenario code, they can also be provided for selection from the MP setup menu. These can be written either for specific scenarios/maps or so that they are available for all maps.

Races

Elves

Main article: Elves

A group of Rebels fighting some
Undead at Cynsaun Battlefield.

Compared to humans, elves are somewhat taller, more agile but less sturdy. They have slightly pointy ears, pale skin and usually blond hair. Few differences between humans and elves are more pronounced than the latter’s unusually long life — most, unless claimed by illness, accident or war, live a full two centuries. While some elves possessing a high magical aptitude have been known to live an additional full century, most elves begin to grow physically frail approaching their twentieth decade and pass away within a few decades after. Elves are naturally imbued with magic to a small degree. Though most are unable to channel it directly, its latent presence gives them their keen senses and long life. Many elves have magic-driven talents such as marksmanship or stealth, allowing them to achieve tasks that most normal beings would find astonishing. Those elves that learn to wield this power in more general ways can become truly formidable in its use. Many choose to use their gift to heal others.

Humans

Main article: Humans

The race of men is an extremely diverse one. Although they originally came from the Old Continent, men have spread all over the world and split into many different cultures and races. Although they are not imbued with magic like other creatures, humans can learn to wield it and able to learn more types than most others. They have no extra special abilities or aptitudes except their versatility and drive. Although often at odds with all races, they can occasionally form alliances with the less aggressive races such as elves and dwarves. The less scrupulous among them do not shrink back from hiring orcish mercenaries, either. They have no natural enemies, although the majority of men, like most people of all races, have an instinctive dislike of the undead. Men are shorter than the elves, but taller still than dwarves. Their skin color can vary, from almost white to dark brown.

Mermen

The Merfolk live in the shallow parts of the ocean, wary of the monsters that lurk in the deep. Ordinarily they form alliances with no one, but in Asheviere’s time they allied with the elves in order to defeat their captors. Mermen are powerful and quick in any watery environment, but struggle greatly to move on land.

Woses

Little is known about the Woses, apart from their tree-like appearance. However these beings have not descended from trees, despite the similarity in form. They seem to be wardens of the natural world.

Download

To clone a copy of the repository into a directory named «wesnoth«, run this command:

> git clone "https://github.com/wesnoth/wesnoth.git" wesnoth
Technical aside: Git transport protocols
There are other transport protocols, in addition to Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS), over which one can clone a Git repository from GitHub, including:

  • Secure Shell (SSH) («», or «»), which provides a bit more security, and can be more convenient for developers, but needs to be set up first (see the «Push access» section, below).
  • Git’s native transport protocol («»), which may be somewhat faster than HTTPS (though GitHub uses a faster «smart» HTTPS transport), but is insecure and should be used (if one must use it) with caution (check the commit hashes!).

(Note: the «>» sigil represents a command prompt; don’t type it in.)

FAQ

Q: The repository is about three gigabytes large, and my Internet connection is not stable enough to reliably download it. What should I do?

  1. Put this «wesnoth.git» directory, which is the internals of the Wesnoth repository, in a new, empty directory.
  2. Rename the «wesnoth.git» directory to «.git«.
  3. Finally, run these commands in the directory that contains the «.git» directory:
> git remote add remote "https://github.com/wesnoth/wesnoth.git"
> git reset --hard HEAD

The first command links your local repository to the upstream repository; the second checks out a working tree (i.e., copies the files out of the «.git» directory into a form that you can use).

Alternative: This will make a shallow clone and allow you to fetch additional history as desired.

  1. Start by using a clone command
  2. Run a git fetch command with an increased depth, such as «git fetch —depth=2000»
  3. Continue to run additional fetch commands, each time increasing the depth, based on what your connection can handle. As of this writing, the max depth is around 60-70K.
  4. When an increase in depth no longer brings additional data, verify you have a complete repository by using «git fetch —unshallow»
  5. To fix the single branch checkout aspect, use git config and fetch commands.

A sample sequence is shown below. You may want to use smaller depth increases (i.e.,2-5K) based on your connection speed and reliability.

> git clone --depth 1 "https://github.com/wesnoth/wesnoth.git" wesnoth
> git fetch --depth=10000
> git fetch --depth=20000
> git fetch --depth=30000
> git fetch --depth=40000
> git fetch --depth=50000
> git fetch --depth=60000
> git fetch --depth=70000
> git fetch --unshallow
> git config remote.origin.fetch "+refs/heads/*:refs/remotes/origin/*"
> git fetch origin

Q: I don’t want any alternate branches or repository history. How could I avoid downloading that?

A: This simply requires a more elaborate command. For example, to only download the last revision of the 1.14 branch, and store it in a directory named «wesnoth-1.14-single-branch-test«:

> git clone --branch 1.14 --single-branch --depth 1 "https://github.com/wesnoth/wesnoth.git" wesnoth-1.14-single-branch-test

Example results:

> git clone --branch 1.14 --single-branch --depth 1 "https://github.com/wesnoth/wesnoth.git" wesnoth-1.14-single-branch-test
Cloning into 'wesnoth-1.14-single-branch-test'...
remote: Counting objects: 20751, done.
remote: Compressing objects: 100% (20087/20087), done.
remote: Total 20751 (delta 968), reused 11881 (delta 416), pack-reused 0
Receiving objects: 100% (20751/20751), 444.98 MiB | 636.00 KiB/s, done.
Resolving deltas: 100% (968/968), done.
Checking out files: 100% (20369/20369), done.
> du -sh wesnoth-1.14-single-branch-test # "du" means "disk usage".
1.3G	wesnoth-1.14-single-branch-test

However, for development and testing, it is often better to have some of the repository history, so that you can quickly check out older versions of the repository to pin down a bug.

Races

Undead

A group of Undead fighting someRebels at Cynsaun Battlefield.

Main article: Undead (race)

Undead are not really a single race of creatures, although often treated as such. Almost any dead creature can, by a sufficiently skilled necromancer, be reanimated and rise again in undeath. Undead are for the most part unnatural but mindless constructs, obeying whoever created them without question nor thought. A greater mystery of necromancy is in how constructs are sustained without continuous effort from the necromancer. An undead creature does not require the constant attention of the necromancer to command and sustain, but can work autonomously according to the commands of it’s master. Only rarely, perhaps once every few months, does the necromancer need to maintain his creation.

A Dread Bat.

Bats

Bats are flying beasts that feed on the blood of other creatures. While their fangs are not very powerful, the health of victims is drained away along with their blood, and given to the Bats. During battle, this unit can drain life from victims to renew its own health. Bats also have high movement over every terrain, making them a useful scout.

786-826 YW: The Legacy of Black-Eye Karun

After decades of struggle, Black-Eye Karun becomes the first warlord since the assassination of Great Chief Brurbar in 20 YW to unite all the different squabbling orcish tribes under his banner. Among his many accomplishments as a Sovereign, his most famous is the creation of the Great Council.

Karun was a far-sighted individual and he knew that after his death the orcish tribes would once again turn to fighting among themselves, with little he could do to prevent that and consequent peril from the Wesnothians and elves.

Consequently, Karun selected from among all the different tribes six of the most sober and wisest orcs and thus created the Great Council. It was the Great Council’s job to stay aloof from any tribal or territorial squabbling amongst the orcs, but yet always remain there to give advice to whomever came to seek it. In order to preserve the orcish race in the event of an emergency, he invested in them the power to call up The Great Horde. It was established that every orc, no matter what tribe he came from, must obey the summons of The Great Horde and follow wholeheartedly the leader that the Great Council put at the head of The Great Horde.

811 YW

A border dispute between Karun and a human enclave aligned with the Northern Alliance leaves several men and orcs dead and begins a feud that will grow into a fifteen-year war.

826 YW

Rahul I (Lord Protector of the Northern Alliance) and Black Eye Karun sign a peace treaty ending a 15 year war between the humans and the orcs. Soon after this Karun, is ambushed and killed in mysterious circumstances.

829 YW

Frustrated by the fallout of Karun’s supposed assassination, Rahul I resigns, and Howgarth III takes his place as Lord Protector.

842 YW

  • Famine in the Northlands. Famine led humans to colonize some orcish lands and push orcs into desolated hill country. The few orcish tribes who had remained part of the Alliance, feeling the pressure, either left Alliance territory or revolted and were destroyed.
  • Retaliating, the orcs systematically slaughtered human colonies and villages on their lands. Then, Earl Lanbec’h — the most powerful human warlord of the North — determined to abolish the orcish menace raised an army and conferred leadership of it to his son-in-law Baron Alber.

843 YW

  • After 843: Portions of Kapou’e’s army act as mercenaries in foreign struggles with other races which keeps them from attacking their nearest neighbors.

858 YW

The humans once again stage an invasion but prove to be no match for the united orcish forces under the leadership of Kapou’e. Son of the Black Eye ends.

200-350 YW: The Golden Age of Wesnoth

The Golden Age of Wesnoth was the time of the great kings, and of peace and prosperity within the kingdom. The Orcs had suffered a grave defeat at the hands of Wesnoth and Elensefar seventy-five years earlier, so they did not pose much of a threat, and whenever they did attack they were quickly defeated. This allowed the army to lessen in size, and the kings of this age to undertake the great public works they are renowned for. The era ends when the king of Wesnoth dies without an heir, and a new dynasty begins.

350 YW

  • Disintegration of the Kingdom follows the death of Haldric IV.
  • Treaty between lord of Elensefar and king of Wesnoth signed.

After the Great Fall

At some unknown point in the future, an unspeakable cataclysm scorched the surface of the lands. The Wesnoth magicians try to raise up a 3rd sun in the sky, but they fail and the ‘sun’ falls down over Weldyn. The capital is no more. The King and his family are dead and there is no heir. The local leaders tear apart Wesnoth. The nights become longer, days hotter. Evil creatures show up. Forests die, hills turn into rocky wastelands and fields become barren deserts. In the apocalypse allies turn against each other and friends fight over what few resources remain. The great nations were destroyed, and huge numbers of people died. Still amidst the chaos somehow small groups of people survived, sheltered in hidden places. In this post-apocalyptic world survival is a daily struggle as a few remaining tribes eke out an existence among the ruins of fallen empires. Heroic bands of elves, nomadic refugee humans, savage hordes of orcs and dark necromancers all forge new lives under the merciless dual suns, Sela and Naia, of this new Wesnoth.

??? Post-Wesnoth

  • The Quenoth elves adapt to life in barren world of the Great Southern Desert. Over time they lost their affinity for the woodlands of their ancestry and embrace life in the sandy wastelands.
  • Under the leadership of Tanuil, the Quenoth elves build and sustain a fortified village around a rare oasis. The village thrives amidst the hostilities of the desert.
  • One night, a meteor storm rains from the sky and destroys the village of the Quenoth elves. Under the Burning Suns begins. The next day, Tanuil, like many others, is missing and presumed dead. Kalehssar (Kaleh), nephew of Tanuil, takes leadership of the remaining Quenoth elves as the surviving next of kin.
  • Kaleh, heeding the voice of his god Eloh in his dreams, gathers the remaining Quenoth elves and leads them north to a new promised land, foregoing rebuilding of their desert village.
  • The Quenoth elves battle their way north through Undead, Orcs, Bandits and other evil, venturing underground beneath a large mountain range at the command of Eloh.
  • Befriending unexpected allies underground, Kaleh’s forces survive to the other side of the mountain.
  • Keratur, son of Tanuil and survivor of the cataclysm, insane with fright attacks Kaleh. Kaleh defeats Keratur.

Multiplayer

How do I connect to a multiplayer server, when I sit behind a restrictive firewall?

You have to open outgoing TCP port 15000 — 14997 (depending on the version you use) to play multiplayer games over the internet on the official servers.

How to find players for multiplayer game?

Hang around for a while on multiplayer servers and you might find someone to play with. If you observe other people playing you will get informed when someone joins the servers. Maybe you find someone willing to play in the channel dedicated to Wesnoth, #wesnoth at irc.freenode.net.

How to save and load a multiplayer game

Save the game. Give it a good name, so that you can find it among the other saved games.

Create new game. (Give it a name like «private game for X and Y», so that other players will not try joining it, and you do not have to explain or kick them.) The first item in the map/scenario list is «Saved games», select this. Choose the saved game. Wait for the other player(s) to connect. Start the game.

How can I make my computer into a dedicated Wesnoth server?

To setup a dedicated Wesnoth server, you have to compile the game with the «—enable-server» flag, and after you install, simply run wesnothd from the console. This will start the server, listening on TCP port 15000. To compile the server only you can use the flags «—disable-game —enable-server». If you aren’t using a linux or mac operating system, there are a few ways you can compile on Windows… here is one way.

Note: Packages for Wesnoth 1.4 and later include wesnothd by default since it’s required by the «Host a network game» option from the Multiplayer menu, which is the preferred option for temporarily hosting a server instance to play in a LAN or privately through the Internet.

Which versions of Wesnoth can play together?

You only need to make sure you are using the same minor version number (6 in «1.6.x», 8 in «1.8.x» and so on) corresponding to stable branch releases. If you are using a development release (odd minor version numbers), you must be using exactly the same version number as other clients, to avoid out-of-sync (OOS) issues in multiplayer.

If you are using user-made eras or MP scenarios, all players should make sure they are using the same, latest version of the add-on.
