Antergos

The end of Antergos Linux project

On May 21, 2019, Antergos announced its discontinuation. Lack of free time cited as the main reason behind this decision.

Antergos developers also mentioned that since the project’s code still works, it’s an opportunity for interested developers to take what they find useful and start their own projects.

What happens to Existing Antergos users?

If you are an Antergos user, you don’t have to worry a lot. It’s not that your system will be unusable from today. Your system will continue to get updates directly from Arch Linux.

Antergos team plans to release an update to remove the Antergos repositories from your system along with any Antergos-specific packages that no longer serve a purpose as the project is ending. After that any packages installed from the Antergos repo that are in the AUR will begin to receive updates from AUR.

The Antergos forum and wiki will be functional but only for some time.

If you think using an ‘unmaintained’ project is not a good idea, you should switch your distribution. The most appropriate choice would be Manjaro Linux.

Manjaro Linux started around the same time as Antergos. Both Antergos and Manjaro were sort of competitors as both of them tried to make Arch Linux accessible for everyone.

Manjaro gained a huge userbase in the last few years and its community is thriving. If you want to remain in Arch domain but don’t want to install Arch Linux itself, Manjaro is the best choice for you.

Just note that Manjaro Linux doesn’t provide all the updates immediately as Arch or Antergos. It is a rolling release but with stability in mind. So the updates are tested first.

Inevitable fate for smaller distributions?

Here’s my opinion on the discontinuation on Antergos and other similar open source projects.

Antergos was a niche distribution. It had a smaller but dedicated userbase. The developers cited lack of free time as the main reason for their decision. However, I believe that lack of motivation plays a bigger role in such cases.

What motivates the people behind a project? They start it mostly as a side project and if the project is good, they start gaining users. This growth of userbase drives their motivation to work on the project.

If the userbase starts declining or gets stagnated, the motivation takes a hit.

If the userbase keeps on growing, the motivation increases but only to a certain point. More users require more effort in various tasks around the project. Keeping the wiki and forum along with social media itself is a challenging part, leave aside the actual code development. The situation becomes overwhelming.

When a project grows in considerable size, project owners have two choices. First choice is to form a community of volunteers and start delegating tasks that could be delegated. Having volunteers dedicated to project is not easy but it can surely be achieved as Debian and Manjaro have done it already.

Second choice is to create some revenue generation channel around the project. The additional revenue may ‘justify’ those extra hours and in some cases, it could drive the developer to work full time on the project. elementary OS is trying to achieve something similar by developing an ecosystem of ‘payable apps’ in their software center.

You may argue that money should not be a factor in Free and Open Source Software culture but the unfortunate truth is that money is always a factor, in every aspect of our life. I am not saying that a project should be purely driven by money but a project must be sustainable in every aspect.

We have see how other smaller but moderately popular Linux distributions like Korora has been discontinued due to lack of free time. Solus creator Ikey Doherty had to leave the project to focus on his personal life. Developing and maintaining a successful open source project is not an easy task.

That’s just my opinion. Please feel free to disagree with it and voice your opinion in the comment section.

Antergos

Gnome:

Why is Antergos underrated?

Any long time Linux user will know to never guide a Linux newcomer in the general direction of Arch Linux. Well, even a lot of Linux users will not wander into the Arch Linux territory. Arch Linux is for the advanced peeps, period. This is a stereotype. And Arch Linux derivatives are not spared by thins stereotype either. So what’s really going on here?

Arch Linux is an advanced distro alright. But that’s because of it’s rather complex installation method. I agree Arch installation is heavily overwhelming for a newcomer, and even to people with some Linux experience. But that’s it. Once you get an Arch Linux system installed with a GUI, it’s easier to use and manipulate than the simplest of Linux distros. Installation is what demands advanced Linux knowledge.

Antergos provides a simple graphical installer. All the major languages are supported. There are no confusing or stuck up moments during installation of Antergos. So you should be just fine on it whether you’re an advanced user or a newcomer.

Antergos

Antergos

Manjaro

Antergos

Manjaro

Antergos

Manjaro

Antergos

Manjaro

Performance and stability

Low bloat operating systems seldom pose the question of performance. Antergos is fast, blazing if you pick a lightweight desktop environment. I use Gnome and am more than satisfied with the performance. No freezes or glitches at all.

Stability of a Linux distro is heavily dependent on the software delivery and management method (apart from the human factor). Pacman is an efficient package manager. I think it would be safe to say it is the best package manager in the world of desktop Linux. Although bleeding edge, Arch Linux never compromises stability and integrity. The version numbers of packages are upped only after extensive testing and examinations.

And then there are some software which are dependent on certain versions of packages (Eclipse on JDK). Install the newer version of such dependencies and the software breaks. So, Such older dependencies are also kept in repos for this purpose. Arch developers know what they are doing. And bleeding edge does not mean you cannot access older packages at all. Arch Linux Archive is a maintenance of every version of every software to ever pass through the Arch repositories. Pretty huge advantage for programmers and developers.

Arch Linux does not provide the latest of all the software at the expense of stability. Dependencies, frameworks and packages are all extensively tested for compatibility before they are pushed to the general public. So this also applies to Antergos and other Arch-based distros too.

Installation

Installing Antergos Linux is both simple and self-explanatory. But there’s one little issue. The Cnchi installer used by Antergos is still in beta. So you might want to keep in mind the following points.

  • You need an active internet connection for installation. It’s a major drawback.
  • When you boot into a live session, connect the PC to the internet and wait for the installer to open automatically. It will update and open.
  • If the installation fails at any moment during the process (IF), restarting the installation won’t work. You need to reboot the PC.
  • Generally, it takes some time to install the OS as it has to fetch the latest packages from the internet. Depends on the desktop environment you choose and your internet speed.
  • An option to install proprietary graphic drivers, Flash Addons and the browser pf your choice is given at the installation itself.

Evince
Chromium
Firefox
Transmission
Totem
Nautilus

Okular
Gwenview
Clementine
  • Медиаплеер VLC
Kate
Dolphin

Arch User repository

The official Arch Linux software repositories are huge. They contain almost all the stuff you’d need. But Linux is growing as a platform and a lot of new software are created every day, and frankly, all these cannot be included in the official repositories immediately. That does not mean you have to stay away from all the goodies.

Enter Arch User Repository. The Arch User Repository (AUR) is a community-driven repository for Arch users. It contains a huge number of software. Both well-known as well as lesser-known ones. The chances are, if it runs on Linux, it’s probably there in the Arch User Repository.

There is no hassle of searching the internet for repositories to download software. All you have to do is run a ‘yaourt’ command and pick from the options, all without even leaving the terminal. Honestly, this convenience played a huge role in me moving to Antergos.

2) Prepare the installation media

You can burn the ISO file on a CD Media or you can make a Live USB to boot from it for the installation. You will need to retrieve your usb media with the lsblk command just as below:

 $ lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 0 465.8G 0 disk
├─sda1 8:1 0 300M 0 part
├─sda2 8:2 0 99M 0 part /boot/efi
├─sda3 8:3 0 128M 0 part
├─sda4 8:4 0 114.5G 0 part
├─sda5 8:5 0 195.3G 0 part
├─sda6 8:6 0 43.9G 0 part /
├─sda7 8:7 0 104G 0 part /home
└─sda8 8:8 0 7.6G 0 part
sdb 8:16 1 3.6G 0 disk /media/franhesco/086B-BBC1
sr0 11:0 1 1024M 0 rom
mmcblk0 179:0 0 1.9G 1 disk
├─mmcblk0p1 179:1 0 1.4G 1 part /media/franhesco/Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS amd64
└─mmcblk0p2 179:2 0 2.3M 1 part

I recognize my media by the size and it is sdb

You can create a live USB with the dd. It uses the keywords if for the input file so the path of the ISO file and of for the output file which is the path of the media to use

# dd bs=4M if=/path/to/antergos-17.10-x86_64.iso of=/dev/sdb

You can read our article about the dd command

The Interface

Antergos provides all the major desktop environments namely Gnome, Cinnamon, KDE, Xfce, Mate and Openbox. All these desktop environments come with a touch of Antergos.

Antergos has teamed up with Numix to bring about beautiful icons and serene themes which altogether provide a superior feel. It’s default backgrounds are impressive too.

There is no shortage of Linux distros. But if one thing divides them, it is finesse. Hundreds of distros run the Gnome desktop environment. But the ones that display finesse will rise. Antergos definitely makes the list.

Antergos is the successor of CinnArch (Cinnamon+Arch). Who doesn’t love Cinnamon? So I gave Cinnamon a try on Antergos and honestly, Antergos is the best Cinnamon distro out of the box. *Mint scowls*. I did say out of the box.

3) Installation of Antergos

Now boot from the installation media. Unlike some other Linux OS, Antergos doesn’t directly propose to install it but you should need to choose to start Antergos Live as below

When Antergos will finish, the installation or live windows will appear. Now you can choose to install the new system

Now you can choose the language of the system

Now Antergos will check the pre-requisites for the installation process

You must enter your location. In my case, I didn’t find my location which is Cameroon

Now you should indicate your exact timezone. It is important because this will help to choose the best repo and mirror to use for fast download depending on your location. Make sure to activate the Network Time Protocol in order to have a synchronized time

Now you can use choose the keyboard layout to use

We told that Antergos gives the possibility to choose your desktop environment. Now you can select the one to use. The default desktop is Gnome but in my case, I chose Deepin. On the right, you have a view of the desktop and a small description. Choose the one you need

Antergos also offers the possibility to choose the features to install. It supports the Arch User Repository (AUR), some tools (chromium, firefox, steam, etc), LTS kernel and some others which can be chose

The installation needs to download some packages during the process. This is why you need to choose the mirror to use. I recommend to let the installer cnchi chooses the best mirror

For all the OS installation, it is important to choose the installation media so the disk to use. You can need to create some partitions in order to organize your datas. You can install Antergos in all the disk with first option or you can choose a manual installation by creating the different partitions what you need with the last option

Now you have to choose the partition table to use. There are two kinds of partition tables: MBR and GPT.

GPT is the modern partition table recommended to use because it is associated to the EFI mode and also because MBR has some limitation such as only working with disks up to 2 TB in size and only supporting up to four primary partitions. You need to have an MBR extended/logical partition to have more than four primary partitions. GPT doesn’t have these limitations and offers a better data management. So, if you use the EFI boot mode and/or a disk size more than 2TB, use GPT although you can use MBR. In my case, it is MBR

Now that the partition table is chosen, you can start the partitioning scheme. In my case I will create two (02) partitions: root and home. In some installation, you will see the swap which can be important if you use hibernation. With the new machines, you don’t really need to create a swap partition because there is enough memory but, for those who need the swap, it is recommended to create a swap file after the installation and activate it instead of a swap partition.

For those who use the GPT partition table, you will need to create the bootable EFI partition with 100 MB. For MBR disk, the root partition will be set as bootable.

Now you can create the home partition

You can the result as below

A summary of the different configurations during the installation process will appear. If you agree with these information, you can continue the process

Now you can configure your user account

You can validate all the configuration and begin now the proper installation. The process can take some times depending on your network connection.

Now you can enjoy your new system
