What are the limits when sharing with links?

Sync Pro and Business customers can create unlimited links, with unlimited data transfer. Free Sync Starter customers can create up to three (3) links with data transfer.

When sharing folders with links, the people you share with may have an option to download all files in the folder at once. This feature will zip all of the files in the folder to make downloading quicker and easier, and is available on linked folders up to 5 GB in size.

Consider using team shared folders to share folders and files larger than 5 GB in size.

Also to note: the people you share with may be limited by the amount of space available on their own computers or devices.

What are Adaptive VSync and FastSync?

Here’s where things get a little more complicated. GPU companies were well aware of VSync’s potential problems when it was first released, and they’ve been trying to make improved versions ever since. That’s why, when you go into your GPU control panel, you may see different syncing options. More advanced forms of VSync include:

AdaptiveSync: This is an Nvidia improvement that watches the monitor’s max refresh rate. If the FPS of the game is equal or higher to the refresh, VSync is enabled. If the FPS falls below, it’s disabled, thus preventing some input lag issues from arising.

FastSync: FastSync is a more advanced form of Enhanced Sync from Nvidia that enables VSync when necessary and adds in automatic triple buffering to try always to pick the best frame data possible. It takes a lot of power to use but helps fix a lot of VSync issues as well.

Enhanced Sync: Enhanced Sync is AMD’s version of AdvancedSync. It disables VSync when the frame rate drops below a monitor’s refresh rate to prevent related problems.

How to send high-resolution videos to collaborators using Sync

Sometimes I need a way to send high-resolution source video to people on behalf of my clients. BitTorrent Sync is a great tool when I need to transfer files from Point A to Point B as quickly as possible.

I typically use one-way synchronization rather than the more common sync setup. The rationale for that is that changes that clients make to the file don’t get synced back to my computer. Here’s how I set it up.

1. Create a sync folder for the client by clicking the “+” icon in the bottom left of the BitTorrent Sync application.

2. Generate a shared secret and then select a folder that is named after the client I am sharing things with. In this example I’ve named my client folder “BTSync_Client_Name”.

I find that appending BTSync before the client name provides me a handy way to remember that the folder is being shared with others.

3. Open up the folder preferences by right clicking on the folder that I want to share.

4. Copy the “Read only” secret. This is the key to setting up one-way sync. If I wanted to use regular sync, then I would use the full access secret in this window.

5. Provide your client directions on how to use BitTorrent Sync and share the secret with them.

I find that sending directions is helpful since most people don’t know what BitTorrent Sync is and I want to make it as easy as possible for them to get the files they need.

To maintain the highest level of security it’s probably best to share this secret over the phone or an encrypted form of communication like chat.

Passcode (PIN) lock

PIN lock adds an extra level of protection for the Sync app on your mobile device. To enable PIN lock:

1. Open the Sync mobile app.
2. Tap Settings. You can find settings at the bottom of the screen on iPhone and iPad (), or from the menu icon () on Android.
3. Scroll down and tap (toggle) Passcode Lock.
4. Input a 4 digit PIN code.
5. Verify the 4 digit PIN code.

Once enabled, you will be prompted to enter your PIN code whenever you open the Sync app on your mobile device.

Passcode (PIN) lock settings:

Allow Fingerprint: Enabled by default. Allows you to use your fingerprint, as well as the 4 digit code.

No Bypass: Disabled by default. When enabled, sharing to Sync from third-party apps installed on your phone will be blocked.

How Would You Use BitTorrent Sync?

I think that BitTorrent Sync could be used to:

• Send raw footage to a centralized location when you are on a remote shoot
• Transfer media or keep it in sync between locations
• Synchronize project files between different computers
• Send final deliverables to a client

Selective sync

If you have the Sync desktop app installed on multiple computers, you can control which
folders within your Sync folder get synced to each computer. This is accomplished via selective sync as follows:

1. Click the Sync icon on the or the .
2. Click the Settings icon (cog).
3. Select Preferences.
4. Click the Advanced tab.
5. By default all folders are checked, which means that all folders will sync to the computer you are configuring selective sync on. Uncheck folders you do not want synced.
6. Click Apply.

Note: the Sync app does not automatically delete unchecked folders.

When a folder is deselected via selective sync it will show a grey circle with a minus sign overlay icon, signifying that it is no longer syncing and safe to delete from your computer (to free up space). If you re-check a folder in the future, Sync will re-download it from the cloud.

Controlling folder access with team shared folders:

If you are trying to use selective sync to control which folders other people can access, we recommend you setup team shared folders instead. Team shared folders give you granular control over folder access. See the how to use team shared folders article for more details.

Freeing up space with Vault:

If you are trying to use selective sync to store files or folders in the cloud only, we recommend you use Vault instead. See the what is Vault article for more details.

Accessing the Sync app and Sync folder on your computer

Once Sync is installed on your computer, you can access the Sync app by clicking the Sync icon on Windows system tray or Mac menu bar.

Windows system tray:

The Windows system tray is located at the bottom right corner of your screen. If you don’t see the Sync icon in the system tray after installation you may need to click the white up arrow in the system tray first.

Mac menu bar:

The Mac menu bar is located at the top right corner of your screen.

Finding the Sync folder on your computer:

1. Click the Sync icon on the Windows system tray or the Mac menu bar.
2. Click the Sync folder icon.

This opens the Sync folder in a new window on your computer. The Sync folder works just like any other folder on your computer.

Sort and manage your files with the Sync mobile app

Sort options:

You can sort your files and change the view by tapping the (ellipsis) icon at the top right corner of the screen, when viewing your Files or Vault. You’ll get the following options:

• Sort: A-z (sorts your files alphabetically).
• Sort: Newest – Oldest (sorts your files chronologically).
• Grid View or List View (lists your files in a column, or displays large icons and thumbnails or your photos, arranged in a grid).

File management options:

You can manage your files and folders by tapping the (ellipsis) icon to the right of the file name in list view (under the file name in grid view). You’ll get the following options:

• Open with … – Choose a third-party app to preview / open the file.
• Share as attachment … – (Android) Choose a third-party app to process the file.
• Share as a link (or Manage link) – Create a secure link to a file or folder, and share the link via email.
• Create shared folder (or Manage shared folder) – Create a team shared folder and give other team members access.
• Save to device (Android only) – Save the file to local storage on the device.
• Sync offline (or Unset sync offline) – Set the file .
• Copy – Copy the file or folder to a new location in your Sync folder or Vault.
• Rename – Rename the file or folder.
• Move – Move the file or folder to a new location in your Sync folder or Vault.
• Delete – Delete the file or folder.

Multi-select: On Android you can “long press” files to multi-select (tap down on the filename until it is highlighted). On iPhone and iPad tap the (ellipsis) icon at the top right corner of the file listing (in the blue bar) and tap Select Mode to select multiple files. File management options are limited in multi-select mode.

What is the maximum transfer speed?

The maximum transfer speed with Sync is 40 Megabits per second (5 Megabytes per second) per thread, which is super fast. The Sync desktop and mobile apps are multi-threaded, which means that whenever possible, the apps will transfer multiple files simultaneously. The Sync.com web panel is not multi-threaded.

At 40 Mbps, a 1 GB (1,000 MB) file should take less than 5 minutes to download. This estimate does not include encryption overhead, which is typically not noticeable on small files, but can add additional time when transferring very large files.

Important note: Real world transfer speeds will vary, depending on the speed of your own Internet connection, network peering between your ISP and our upstream provider, the amount of data you are transferring, and the size of the files being transferred. The desktop app should be set to Automatic for maximum speed.

What types of files are supported?

You can upload virtually any type of file to Sync, including documents, videos, photos, compressed archives, RAW files, image files and more. Furthermore, Sync does not alter or compress your files in any way.

Sync should not be used to synchronize live databases or live application data across multiple computers, although you can use Vault to periodically backup this type of data.

Important note: To prevent syncing problems across different operating systems and platforms, a subset of incompatible characters are not supported by Sync. Files named with these characters may be skipped (not uploaded), and will be listed under the desktop app progress tab (regardless of syncing status).

Does VSync have any problems?

VSync is far from a perfect solution and can negatively affect your gaming experience, even if it is useful and working as intended. If a monitor and a game are having trouble syncing up, then VSync can lower your frame rate significantly to try to find a point where they can. That can lead to input lag and stuttering increases, which further worsens the gaming experience. Screen tearing is most noticeable in fast-paced games like shooters and fighters, but it can affect all sorts of games, regardless of genre.

That’s why, if you’re particularly serious about these types of games, enabling VSync might not be worth it. There is another setting called triple buffering that can help reduce some of VSync’s problems, but this doesn’t come with any guarantees.

Если к папке был предоставлен полный доступ (чтение и запись), то при изменении ее содержимого на одном из устройств, оно будет меняться и на других. При этом, ограниченная история изменений по умолчанию (эту настройку можно изменить) остается доступной в папке «Архив» (открыть можно в меню папки) на случай каких-либо непредвиденных изменений.

В завершение статей с обзорами я обычно пишу что-то похожее на субъективный вердикт, но здесь не знаю, что именно написать. Решение очень интересное, но лично для себя я не нашел применений. Гигабайтных файлов не передаю, а излишней паранойи по поводу хранения своих файлов в «коммерческих» облачных хранилищах не имею, именно с их помощью и осуществляю синхронизацию. С другой стороны, не исключаю, что для кого-то такой вариант синхронизации окажется хорошей находкой.

Desktop app preferences and settings

Desktop app settings are specific to the computer you have installed Sync on. Account-wide settings are managed exclusively from the Sync.com web panel. Once Sync is installed on your computer, you can access the Sync desktop app preferences as follows:

1. Click the Sync icon on the or the .
2. Click the Settings icon ().
3. Select Preferences from the menu.

Options tab:

Run When Computer is Started – Sync automatically starts when you sign into your computer. With this option disabled you would have to manually start Sync. Enabled by default.

Show Desktop Notifications – When multiple people are collaborating, the Sync app will display pop-up notifications, letting you know if the file has changed. Desktop notifications may also include important account, file and system notifications. Enabled by default.

Show Icon Overlays – The Sync app displays over every file and folder in the Sync folder when enabled. Enabled by default.

Report Errors to Server – When the Sync app encounters an error, a notification is sent to our QA team for further review. This helps our team identify and solve issues.

Account tab:

Change password – Change a forgotten password directly from the desktop app. This feature can be .

Export a listing of all files – Click Generate to download a .CSV document listing all files in your Sync folder and Vault. This is useful for auditing everything you have in Sync.

Network tab:

Bandwidth settings – You can limit app transfer speed, which is useful if you have limited bandwidth available. Automatic is the fastest setting.

Disk Cache – To improve performance, the Sync app temporarily stores file data in a hidden cache folder, located inside the Sync folder. The temporary cache takes up additional space on your computer and is automatically cleared from time to time. You can manually clear the cache or adjust the automatic cleanup schedule.

Configure a Network Proxy – This is an advanced network configuration that can enable Sync to work behind a SOCKS5 VPN service. The default proxy type is Automatic (no proxy).

SSL Certificates – Allow Sync to be used behind corporate firewalls that utilize trusted third-party SSL certificates. Disabled by default.

Progress tab:

The progress tab provides file transfer details, and lists any files or folders that are not syncing. If your files are not syncing, this is a good place to start troubleshooting.

Advanced tab:

The Advanced tab allows you to control which folders get synced to each computer, a feature called . Selective sync is typically used if Sync is installed on multiple computers, and you want to control which folders (in your Sync folder) get synchronized to each computer.

Sync mobile app settings, storage and memory management

By default the Sync mobile apps do not store files in Sync directly on your device unless you tap or preview them first. This “on demand” approach saves space and mitigates excessive data usage. You can use the to store selected files or folders directly on your device as needed.

Files you tap to preview or open will be stored locally on your device in a temporary cache folder managed by the Sync app, which does take up space on your phone.

You can manage local storage settings to free up space as follows:

1. Open the Sync mobile app.
2. Tap Settings. You can find settings at the bottom of the screen on iPhone and iPad (), or from the menu icon () on Android.
3. Tap Clear Cache to clear the temporary file cache used by Sync (which can help free up space on your device)
4. Under Offline Settings you can also tap Clear Offline Files which will remove all files and folders that you previously set for .

Does it make a big difference?

VSync only helps with screen tearing, and it only really does that through limiting FPS when necessary. If your monitor can’t keep up with the FPS of a particular game, then VSync can make a big difference.

However, VSync cannot improve your resolution, or your colors or your brightness levels, like HDR. It’s a preventative technology that’s focused on stopping a specific problem rather than making improvements. It also tends to harm performance.

By forcing frames to be entirely rendered before being displayed, your FPS can suffer, and at best, your frame rate is limited to the refresh rate of your display. In the case of some games where higher FPS can lead to reduced input lag, it can also affect your competitive performance.

Limitations of BitTorrent Sync

If you are using BitTorrent Sync to work with clients, the biggest drawback is the fact that everybody you sync files with will need to install a copy of the software. This is very easy to do, but having spoken with hundreds of production and post companies about collaboration, I know that this could be a stumbling block for less tech savvy clients. Dropbox and services like it provide ways for collaborators to access files without installing software.

Another drawback with the tool is that it’s designed for straight up syncing and media sharing. While it has granular control over permissions, syncing and versioning, it doesn’t offer things like video conversion, file previewing, or the ability to track whether people who have received files have viewed them or shared their access key with others. Whether these are limitations to you really depends on how you want to collaborate with others using the files that you have shared. Alternatives like Dropbox and Google Drive provide more options to track usage and work collaboratively with files that have been shared.

In the case of video production, you could get around these problems by using BitTorrent Sync in tandem with ScreenLight. Sync could be used when source files need to be shuttled around, and ScreenLight could be used when different people need to share and provide feedback on media in a centralized place.

A final limitation of BitTorrent Sync comes from the decentralized design. If you want to sync between two devices without a central hub, both of them must be on at the same time. Some people have done hacks to get around this by setting up their own central hub using a cloud server or a creating a personal cloud. If this is really a problem for a large number of people, I suspect that less techie solutions will emerge.

Open your files with third-party apps on your phone or tablet

You can open your files in Sync using third-party applications installed on your phone. For Microsoft Office documents follow these instructions. For any other file format follow these instructions:

1. Open the Sync mobile app.
2. Browse to the file you’d like to open.
3. Tap the (ellipsis) icon beside the file, to open the file menu.
4. Tap Open With.
5. A list of apps installed on your phone that can open the file will appear. Tap the app you’d like to open the file.

Note: Once you have opened the file in another app, edits or changes made to the file in that app may not save back to Sync automatically. You may have to changes back to Sync from the app, by sharing them back to Sync.
